Kids Need to Know--Reading is Fun!

I came across the following article in the San Antonio Express-News, "Kids need to know reading is fun--Experts suggest ways to help them find out," written by Michael Kelly from the Albany Times Union. In it he analyzes Scholastic's 2008 Kids and Family Reading Report which shows that kids are reading les and less for fun.

Some alarming high(low)lights:

--Only one in 4 kids read for fun daily.

--Twenty-two percent of kids rarely read for fun.

--Half of all kids think there aren't any interesting books for them.

What can parents do to help their children read more? Simply put--read to them! Praise them for their reading accomplishments. Find out what interests them and get them books on it!

Most important (for me) is to encourage your kids to read at a young age.

Here are some recently released books that I believe will entertain your child or children and foster in them an appreciation for books and the stories they tell:

The "My Family, Mi Familia" bilingual (Spanish) series by Pat Mora
Illustrated by Maribel Suarez
Rayo, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers
This is scheduled to be a four book series.

Book Three was just released and is entitled "Here, Kitty, Kitty!/Ven, gatita, ven" and it's about a newly acquired cat that likes to hide.

Book Two is "Sweet Dreams, Dulce Suenos" and it's about going to sleep at night.

Book One is "Let's Eat/A Comer" and it's about a family thankful for dinner.

My six-year-old daughter loves the series and the bilingual stories has even reinforced a couple of Spanish words--especially when she can now put a colorful picture to the words!

Arte Publico has a bilingual book recently released entitled "Growing up with Tamales/Los Tamales de Ana" by Gwendolyn Zepeda and illustrated by April Ward. This is a book for young readers (perhaps a couple of years older than my daughter) about a little girl named Ana who is learning how to make tamales, but who wishes she was as proficient at it as her sister who is two years older.

This book really captured my attention because it described the thoughts and hopes of a six-year-old who has carefully thought out her future and there's a funny twist at the end for her sister!

HarperCollins Children's Books recently released an all-Spanish book by Cheech Marin--yes, that Cheech!--and illustrated by Orlando L. Ramirez, entitled "El Capitan Cheech." The story involves a boat race for Cheech and his Cheecharrones in a transformed school bus! Of course, all kinds of obstacles appear and yet....well, you'll just have to read the book to find out!

Finally, an all-Spanish book released by Rayo, entitled "Tu si puedes, Gabriela!" by Spanish radio psychologist Dr. Isabel Gomez-Bassols with Eric Vasallo and illustrated by Priscilla Garcia Burris, is aimed at children but contains a message for all ages. It deals with preventing obesity in children and features a child named Gabriela who becomes upset when she finishes last in a school race. Gabriela learns how important it is to eat fruits and vegtables, and of course, exercise. It's a cute story that doesn't get bogged down in preaching healthy food and exercise for everyone.

Awaken the Sleeping Poet

Floyd sends the following message regarding:

Awaken the Sleeping Poet!
Thursday, August 28
7 p.m.

Robert Bonazzi’s first book of poetry was Living the Borrowed Life. His second book was Fictive Music and critic Paul Christensen wrote in The Pawn Review: "Bonazzi’s books advance our culture. He is a Prospero of this heat and sunlight, a visionary, an enchanter, an amuser. Rarest of all among poets, he is a player with his medium, a musical bard with wit and charm in an age of factions and morbid cliques of verse.” Perpetual Texts received praise in the Austin American-Statesman and Dallas Morning News. And Robert is the author of the critically-acclaimed Man in the Mirror: John Howard Griffin and the Story of Black Like Me. His essays, reviews, short stories and poems have appeared in over 200 publications – in France, Germany, the UK, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Peru and the U.S.

Also featuring: Paul Christensen

Paul Christensen is an award-winning author of eighteen books of poetry and prose. His books of poems include Blue Alleys: Prose Poems and Hard Country (both winners of the Violet Crown for best book for literature awarded by the Writers' League of Texas). He has published over three hundred essays on a wide array of subjects from travel pieces to political commentary for The Texas Observer. His short story "Water," published in The Madison Review, won the "Best Short Fiction Award" given by the Texas Institute of Letters. And his personal essay, "In Praise of Bluffing," won the first "Distinguished Prose" award given by Antioch Review. Paul is coordinator of creative writing at Texas A&M.

Robert will begin at 7:00 p.m. sharp.

At 8:00 we have open mic. Remember, open mic is where anyone from the audience can participate and read their own (or someone else's) poetry.

MEXICAN ENOUGH: MY LIFE BETWEEN THE BORDERLINES
Washington Square Press, August 2008
Growing up in a half-white, half-brown town and family in South Texas,Stephanie Elizondo Griest struggled with her cultural identity. Upon turningthirty, she ventured to her mother's native Mexico to do a littleroot-searching and improve her "Tarzan Lite" Spanish. She stumbled upon aburgeoning social movement that shook parts of the nation to its core.

MEXICAN ENOUGH chronicles her journey, from the narco-infested border townof Nuevo Laredo to the highlands of Chiapas. She investigates the murder ofa prominent gay activist, sneaks into prison to meet with resistancefighters, rallies with rebels in Oaxaca, and interviews scores of migrantworkers and the families they were forced to leave behind. Travel companionsinclude a Polish thief, a Border Patrol agent, and a Dominatrix. Partmemoir, part journalistic reportage, MEXICAN ENOUGH illuminates how we castoff our identity in our youth, only to strive to find it again as adults --and the lessons to be learned along the way.

MEXICAN ENOUGH is the August pick of the National Latino Book Club, sponsored by Borders Bookstore, the Association of American Publishers, andLas Comadres. Check out the first chapter in the August edition of TexasMonthly Magazine: http://www.texasmonthly.com/2008-08-01/griest.php

Used Car for Sale

This is the first "Used Car Sale" I have posted on the site, but how could I resist when one of San Antonio's premiere poet, Naomi Shihab Nye, can vouch for the car! Here's her note:

"I can also vouch for the car! It is really trusty and even has one of those cool Subaru ice chests built into the back floor of it... please feel free to forward this message, he is anxious to sell as he is leaving to Vancouver in less than 2 weeks...naomi"

Here's a description of the car:

2000 Subaru Forester L - One owner, clean, runs great! - $5000 (Downtown SA)

For sale is a 2000 Subaru Forester L purchased new from the dealer (one owner). 5-speed manual transmission. This car looks really nice. I have performed regular maintenance at the proper intervals, and have installed new tires twice. The interior is very clean, and shows wear consistent with an 8 year old car. The engine runs great, and the vehicle has never broken down while driving. Car's exterior has no dents or major blemishes, but does have various minor nicks and scratches accumulated over time. Mileage is 118500.

The timing belt and water pump have just been replaced (routine required maintenance).

The A/C blows cold, the heater works well, all power windows/locks/mirrors work, front and rear wipers/defog all work great. The factory CD player stopped reading discs, so I replaced it with an aftermarket Sony CD player in 2007. The vehicle is equipped with a keyless entry system (one remote).

Some things you should be aware of: - New clutch installed within first two years due to tightness issues. This issue was covered under warranty and has never resurfaced. - Faulty "Check Engine" light – Many early 2000s Foresters have this issue, and it has to do with the oxygen sensor. The oxygen sensor was replaced, and the light continued to stay on while driving. Subaru dealer tells us not to worry about it, and turned off the light for us. - Side panels have been dented on two occasions. Both instances were minor and were repaired by body shops. No major body damage, engine damage, or frame damage has ever been inflicted. - Vehicle color is dark green (forest green). Type "L" trim.

I live in downtown San Antonio, Texas. I will be available on weekends if you wish to come look at the car or test-drive it.

If you are interested, please call my cell at (210) 777-7154 and we will set up an appointment.

Thanks –
Madison Nye

SAPA Update

A Message from Floyd Lamrouex

I just wanted to get the word out that the San Antonio Poets' Association (SAPA) website has been updated. The web address is: http://www.sapoetsassoc.org/

I want to thank the new SAPA president, Valerie Bailey, for the monumental amount of hard work and assistance she provided in the updating process. The content for the website has to come from somewhere, and Valerie was phenomenal in helping put the website's content together.

So what's on the website? There's topic information for the 2008-2009 SAPA poetry contests; information about our Poet Laureate and the runners up; information about the Speakers we'll be having at each of our SAPA meetings; information about, and a link to, the Poetry Society of Texas; and, a link to the National Federation of State Poetry Societies. There's also a roster of members, which includes addresses and e-mail addresses and poems of the members.

Our next SAPA meeting is September 20 at 2:00 p.m. And remember, only dues paid members can enter the monthly poetry contests, receive a free copy of the SAPA anthology, Inkwell Echoes, and receive a copy of the SAPA handbook.

So check out the site, and if you should notice something that could be updated or needs to be corrected, please contact me so that I can fix it.

See you in September!
Floyd (Michaud) L. Lamrouex

College offers Conjunto Scholarships

The Conjunto Music Program at Palo Alto College is offering scholarships to musicians who successfully pass an audition, enroll at PAC, and join the program’s performing ensemble.

Interested musicians, male and female, should be proficient as a vocalist, or in one or more of the following conjunto instruments: button accordion, bajo sexton, bass or drums. Proficiency in other instruments such as the guitar, saxophone, keyboards and percussion will also be considered.

Scholarships range from $500 to $1,000 per semester and will be awarded by the PAC Conjunto Music Program and the Valerio Longoria Memorial Scholarship in the Fall 2008 semester.

The Conjunto Music Program is the only one of its kind at the college and university level in the nation. Under the direction of Juan Tejeda, the program was established in 2002 and offers a wide range of services such as classes in Private accordion and Bajo Sexo, the Conjunto Notation and Recording Project, the development of a Tejano/Conjunto resource library, and an Artists-in-Residency Program. Acclaimed Conjunto musicians Eva Ybarra and Jesus “Chucho” Perales are scheduled to join Tejeda in teaching these courses at PAC.

Musicians interested in auditioning for the Conjunto Music Program and applying for a scholarship should call Tejeda at (210) 531-9505.

Power Interview

This morning, a group of Society officers joined me for an interview with Jo-Ann Power, a freelance writer for a Boerne publication. She also happens to be president and CEO of Power Promotions--a "powerful" marketing firm!

We met at the Barnes and Nobles on IH 10 and De Zavala at 10:30 a.m. and spent a little over an hour speaking about the founding of the Society, past accomplishments and future pursuits. We also went roundtable and discussed current writing projects.

I believe once the article is written, it will help us in letting Boerne and San Antonio know about the wonderful members of our Society who are truly on their path to publication.

I'll let you know when the story appears.
