Kindle Books

The following post is from Ruben Soto, SLHW President:

Several writers at tonight’s event wanted to read other Kindle books for inspiration to write theirs. Here are three samples of ebooks that are in the news lately.

The classic “Bless Me, Ultima” was just released as a movie and the Kindle version is $5.69. “!Yo!” by Julia Alvarez is a great story at only $1.99 and was published this month and “Jenni Rivera – A Tribute” was just published and is FREE.

in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication

SAN MARCOS, Feb. 6, 2013 -- More than 70 scholars, media professionals and graduate students in the field of mass communication are expected to attend the Fourth International Spanish-Language and Latino-Oriented Media Conference set for Feb. 21-23 at Texas State University. International scholars from universities in Barcelona, Colombia, Mexico and Puerto Rico as well as the United States will present their research work, findings, theories and assessments on topics including marketing communication, media ownership and practices, media and society, telecommunication and media policies, media adoption and culture, and electronic and interactive communication, among others.

“The demographic changes witnessed through the last two decades in the Americas have been an inspiration to continue exploring and assessing topics that impact the media,” said Dr. Federico Subervi, director of the Center for the Study of Latino Media and Markets (CSLM&M). “This is the largest regular gathering of scholars, media professionals and students focused on Spanish-language and Latino-oriented media in the hemisphere and also in Spain,” Subervi added.

Dr. Sindy Chapa, the Center’s assistant director, said the conference is a vehicle for scholars and graduate students to share their research on Spanish-language media and Latino consumers with faculty, practitioners and peers by stressing the importance of research development opportunities targeting Latino communities in the United States.

“This year’s conference will highlight the participation of NBC,, iLatino.TV/Gobba.TV, Fox news Latino, Patch AOL Latino and Huffington Post Latino Voices during the Feb. 23 plenary session at the LBJ Ballroom. Perspectives on Ethnic Studies

From Juan Tejeda:

Colleagues and Camaradas: Palo Alto College and Gemini Ink are sponsoring a Civil Rights Panel/Community talk entitled "Perspectives on Ethnic Studies: Is a Multicultural Education a Civil Right?" (see attached poster), next week, Thursday, February 7 at the Palo Alto College Performing Arts Center Main Theatre (1400 Villaret). There will be a free screening of the award-winning documentary film, Precious Knowledge, at 11am, with the panel discussion to take place immediately after from about 12:15-2:15pm. We have some interesting panelists so it should prove to be a lively discussion on this very important educational issue. Do we have a right to learn about our own history and culture in our schools? How should this manifest itself? Come and join in on the discussion. It's free and open to the community. A reception with light food and drinks will follow the panel discussion. Hope to see you there and please spread the palabra. Gracias. Juan
