RESEÑA DE EVENTO CULTURAL EN LA UNAM

El pasado Jueves, 19 de enero, 2012 tuvimos el placer de acompañar en el auditorio de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México en San Antonio a la eminente escritora histórica Dra. Florence Weinberg y a nuestro compañero André Csihas durante el evento cultural organizado por ellos mismos para marcar la culminación del proyecto de traducción al español de la trilogía misterio-policíaca que tiene como personaje principal a Ygnacio (Ignaz) Pfefferkorn, sacerdote jesuita y figura histórica del siglo XVIII.

Durante una agradable velada, la numerosa concurrencia disfrutó del encanto y conocimiento de la Dra. Weinberg quien nos contó cómo surgió su interés por este poco conocido sacerdote jesuita habitante del desierto de Sonora en la segunda parte del siglo XVIII, quien posteriormente fue expulsado del país y apresado por órdenes de la corona española. Una vez iniciadas sus indagaciones, la autora no pudo controlarse. Entre más conocía de su vida, más deseaba descubrir. Así pues, el fruto de su trabajo generó suficiente material para tres novelas históricas y un sinnúmero de anécdotas divertidas.

Acompañada por su traductor al idioma español, André Csihas, quien cabe mencionar realizó una excelente labor al plasmar en la lengua castellana las palabras originalmente escritas en inglés de la Dra. Weinberg, se procedió a una breve lectura tanto en inglés como en español del primer capítulo del tercer libro: “The Storks of La Caridad” o “El Jesuita y La Caridad.”

La plática concluyó tras una sesión de preguntas y respuestas, y los invitados fueron convidados a una recepción donde la Dra. Weinberg y André Csihas personalmente dedicaron los libros previamente adquiridos por los asistentes.

Felicidades a ambos y a la UNAM de San Antonio por orquestar un evento sumamente interesante y por el gran logro profesional en las carreras de ambos. Les deseamos mucho éxito.

two of San Antonio's jewels. The poetry
of these two wonderful poets is both
hilarious and poignant. They are unique
and wonderful poets. Superlatives do
not do them justice. Don't let anything
keep you from experiencing these two ladies.

Margaret Mayberry -- San Antonio, Texas
Since she was a child Margaret has always loved to write, both poetry and prose, but mostly she wrote prose. In her twenties in England, she did a page regularly for a couple of magazines: one for the Michelin tire company in-house magazine and the other a magazine for truck drivers, i.e. a page for the wife. They are not what she would call writing. She wrote stories and essays and later memoirs for pleasure and writing groups, but not publication. As an adult with children Margaret's life became busy and her writing took a back seat for many years. Now in her senior years she can find time and started writing seriously about four years ago. She has been published in The Awaken the Sleeping Poet Anthology, The Voices along the River Anthology, Poetry Society of Texas Book of the Year and the 2009 Texas Poetry Calendar. She writes poetry because she enjoys it and hopes that her grandchildren will one day be interested in her poems. She belongs to several poetry writing groups, including the San Antonio Poets' Association.

Carol M. Siskovic -- San Antonio, Texas
Carol said, "When you introduce me, I hope you keep it simple; just say that I love poetry -- reading it, listening to it, writing it, sharing it. Enough said. That being said, here is some bio information about Carol. She is a retired English teacher who has taught in the Philippine Islands, England, Mississippi, and Texas. She ended her career teaching for Northside ISD and Alamo Community Colleges. She has been the editor of several poetry anthologies, including the one for Texas Council of Teachers of English and Language Arts (TCTELA). She is published in a number of anthologies, including POETRY AFTER LUNCH and Naomi Nye's IS THIS FOREVER OR WHAT? She is a Founder of the San Antonio Poetry Fair, and a Founder of the Northside May Day Poetry Celebration for high school students. She has also been a juror for the R&E JOURNAL, a publication of Abydos Learning International for which she is a writing and reading trainer.

El evento incluirá una presentación del trasfondo histórico de las tresnovelas, seguido por la lectura en inglés del primer capítulo breve de una delas obras, por su autora, Florence Weinberg, y posteriormente la lectura delmismo capítulo en español por el Sr. Csihas. Las novelas estarán disponiblespara la venta al público y dedicadas personalmente por la autora.

Las novelas, en castellano, Eljesuita y el brujo, El jesuita y latormenta y El jesuita y La Caridad,están basadas en la vida del padre Ygnacio (Ignaz) Pfefferkorn, S. J., unmisionero jesuita y personaje histórico del siglo XVIII que vivió en Sonora,México. En estas novelas de misterio policíaco, el padre jesuita aclara unasesinato salvaje para proteger a sus conversos y a otro hermano misionero. Eltrasfondo histórico de cada novela es sumamente preciso, basado en lainvestigación, tanto de archivos como sitios históricos. Cada novela contieneun apéndice que detalla claramente la diferencia entre lo histórico y lo ficticio.

Espero que puedan asistir a esta interesante presentación en la que podránconocer lo que hasta el momento ha sido un período lóbrego pero importante enla historia de México y de la Iglesia Católica, y asimismo tendrán la ocasiónde compartir unos momentos con la autora y el traductor de estas interesantesnovelas.

Highlights of Monday's SLHW Meeting

The Society of Latino and Hispanic Writers of San Antonio held the first meeting for 2012 last Monday, January 9 at 7:30 p.m. at Barnes & Noble San Pedro Crossings.

The society was honored to receive as first guest for the year, five time Emmy Award winner journalist, Mr. Patricio Espinoza.

Mr. Espinoza’s talk dealt with the constant evolution of news broadcasting and the opportunities available for writers in the virtual world. His current project, a hyperlocal news website, AlamoCityTimes.com, is an open forum and Mr. Espinoza encouraged the members of the society to participate and send their pieces in English and in Spanish.

Thank you, Mr. Espinoza for visiting with us and we look forward to working with you this year!

We also received the visit of SLHWSA member, Florence Weinberg, a writer and retired university professor who came to extend an invitation to all members to the upcoming presentation of her Three Pfefferkorn mystery novels which have also been translated into Spanish by SLHWSA member, André Csihas. This event will take place at the UNAMof San Antonio Campus, Thursday, January 19, 2012at 6:30 p.m.

Please join us this Monday, January 9, for the monthly meeting of the Society of Latino and Hispanic Writers of San Antoino at the Barnes and Noble, San Pedro Crossing at 7:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

This month we will be featuring Patricio Espinoza, an experienced and accomplished five time Emmy Award winning Journalist & New Media Creative and Producer.

Patricio's particular interest is the undeserved Latino English market and Spanish language news content. He covers and contributes with related topics to several national news organizations including: ABC.com and ABC News, A&E, Discovery, NPR, PBS, Entertainment Tonight, Billboard Latino, Univision and Telemundo among others.

Patricio Espinoza is the founding News Director of Telemundo, San Antonio (1989-1993) where he built an entire local news team beating the competition after 30 years ruling that market. In 1993 Patricio also founded the Telemundo's Texas News Bureau and acted as their first network Texas Correspondent. He is an active member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.

Patricio was born in Quito, Ecuador, and lives with his family in San Antonio, Texas.

SLHW Membership Drive

The Society of Latino and Hispanic Writers of San Antonio celebrated seven years on July, 2011. In that time we have had the good fortune to become a 501( c) (3) non-profit organization. As such, we are eligible to apply for grants to further our members writing careers and to contribute to the community as well.

However, in order to do this, we need to become a viable organization with funds. To reach our goals, both short term and long term, we are going to implement a membership drive beginning November 2011 through January 31, 2012. We will email a membership application to all the members we now have who have provided us with their email addresses. At this time we will also ask for annual dues of $25. Federico García Lorca is celebrated the world over for his poetry, music and plays.
Yet at the age of 27, he was still a struggling artist living with his parents, staging
puppet plays that were laughed off the stage by the critics. His need for freedom
fueled his desire to succeed. In search of duende , his travels through New York and
Cuba became a quest for cultural integration.

Duende de Lorca follows the early years of Federico’s early successes from the opening night
of Mariana Pineda , followed by the printing of Gypsy Ballads and Poet in New York.
Audiences will share in his triumphs and failures and his relationships with Salvador
Dali, Melchor Almagro, Emilio Aladren and others as his journey from New York to
Cuba shapes his life and his art.

“The macabre and elegant words of Federico García Lorca have jumped from the page to the stage in Miracle Theatre’s current production. The bilingual one-act by Dañel Malán intersperses surreal, poetic flourishes with the grueling challenges the poet faced in his youth. Duende has some surprises: it’s not in every play that a down-in-the-dumps protagonist falls in love with a butterfly and is tormented by evil cockroaches. A showcase of Lorca’s dark and beautiful writing, Duende de Lorca is fully comprehensible to non-English and non-Spanish speakers alike. San Antonio artist Thelma Muraida joins local author Diane Gonzales Bertrand in a presentation of their new books and in sharing words of advice to aspiring artists and writers. A chance meeting at a party three years ago between Muraida and Bertrand allowed them to not only catch up on news about the old neighborhood (both were raised in the Woodlawn Lake area), but also for Bertrand to encourage a former school friend to submit an artist’s portfolio to her Houston publisher, Arte Publico Press.

Together they celebrate the release of Muraida’s first illustrated picture book, Clara and the Curandera/Clara y la curandera (authored by Monica Brown) and Bertrand’s new bilingual title, Adelita and the Veggie Cousins/Adelita y las primas verduritas.

On Monday, November 14, at 7:30 pm during the monthly meeting of the Society of Hispanic and Latino Writers, Muraida and Bertrand will discuss the process of creating books for children from their different perspectives as illustrator and writer. Both will discuss their own creative process; discuss working with the book publisher, and offer suggestions to deal with rejection when the first concept or manuscript is declined. A question and answer session and a book signing will follow the presentation.

National Recognition of Local Documentary Filmmaker

The University of Texas, San Antonio-October 20, 2011- - Throughout National Hispanic Heritage Month, As Long As I Remember, Laura Varela’s documentary on Chicanos during the Viet Nam War aired on PBS stations throughout the country. This film engages ideas about post-traumatic stress syndrome in the context of activism and the role of art in memory.

The Mexican American Studies (MAS) program, in conjunction with the Consortium for Social Transformation, History Department, and American Studies program at UTSA, will celebrate the national debut and recognition of San Antonio’s documentary filmmaker’s work. While documentary films are developing a market, the recognition of her work and the development of documentaries from a Chicana/o perspective are still needed.

It was Varela’s activism and work with the National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP) and support form the Humanities Texas Funding, and Latino Public Broadcasting that moved American Public Media to air this vital documentary.

Varela stated that her idea was always to have it on PBS, to get national audiences to understand the Mexican American experience. Prior to its national airing, the film has been presented at veteran’s centers, with veterans’ groups, and the response has been great. Ms. Varela has received many personal letters, like from a veteran who said that the film “filled a hole that couldn’t be healed.” Additionally, letters from children of Viet Nam vets, who felt alone in their experience, expressed having a fuller historical understanding of the era.

With this documentary, it is Varela’s hope to use the film as an educational venue for universities and high schools where discussions about Chicanos in the military, art, or PTSD would examine the different perspectives that the film offers.

The event is part of the Mexican American Studies Campus-Community Colloquium as part of UTSA’s strategic initiative to serve the public by offering programs that expand the community’s awareness of Mexican American history through the visual and cultural arts. The MAS/Community Colloquium with Laura Varela will be held on Wednesday, November 9th, at UTSA, Downtown Campus, Buena Vista Building. Reception begins at 5:30 pm and film with questions and answers to follow.

My City, My Voice

Citizen’s Bill of Rights and Responsibilities: My City, My Voice is the name of a project being undertaken by students from the Fall 2011 Advanced Communities class in the Department of Social Work at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA).

The project is an outgrowth of the SA 2020 community sustainability initiative unveiled by Mayor Julián Castro at the UTSA Downtown Campus on March 19, 2011. More specifically, the project fits under the SA 2020 Government Accountability and Civic Engagement Vision Area. The primary objective of the project is to develop a Citizen’s Bill of Rights and Responsibilities that reflects the voices of a broad cross-section of the citizens of San Antonio. A secondary objective of the project is to create a transformative learning experience for students in the class.
The students are responsible for all aspects of the project, including reaching out to citizens and other stakeholders to obtain information that will serve as the basis for the Citizen’s Bill of Rights and Responsibilities, engaging the media to promote the work of the project, seeking in-kind and other donations, and organizing a final event at which the Citizen’s Bill of Rights and Responsibilities will be presented.

Written during a period of recovery and rehabilitation after a stroke he suffered in 2009, it also explores themes of morality, physical frailty, prejudice and family. Juan Perez

Juan Manuel Perez is a Mexican-American poet from La Pryor, Texas.
He is the San Antonio Poets Association 2011 Poet Laureate. He is the
author of Another Menudo Sunday (2007), the e-book O'Dark Heaven:
A Response To Suzette Haden Elgin's Definition of Horror (2009) and
six poetry chapbooks, including the horrifically acclaimed Dial H for
Horror (2006). Juan's newest book is WUI: Written Under the
Influence of Trinidad Sanchez, Jr. was compiled in Trino's honor and
was released in February 2011. Besides a member of SAPA, he is also
a member of The Poetry Society of Texas, The San Angelo Writers' Club,
the Science Fiction Poetry Association, the Horror Writers Association,
the Alamo Area Poets of Texas, and the Writers of the Rio Grande.

Peter Holland

Peter Holland is a native of San Antonio. He has been writing poems
and stories since high school. Over the last decade plus he has been
a regular at many local open mic readings. He is an active member of
the San Antonio Poets Association. He is also a member and current
president of the Alamo Area Poets Association. He is a member of the
Poetry Society of Texas. He has had a chapbook “A Year in South Texas”
published by Pecan Grove Press as well as in several local anthologies,
and the newspaper. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in History from UTSA.

She's a marvelous poet, with four collections-- most recently, The Plath Cabinet (Four Way Books, 2009), a fascinating book. But my favorite of her titles is 1-800-Hot-Ribs (Gibbs-Smith, 1993, reissued Carnegie-Mellon, 2010). She grew up in San Antonio (and El Paso) and has won more prizes than I'm going to name here. We're especially thrilled to welcome her because, before moving to NYC for grad work at Columbia, she received her BA from UTSA. She teaches at Indiana University.

SLHW Book Fair Oct. 1

The Society of Latino and Hispanic Writers of San Antonio (SLHWSA) and Barnes and Noble, San Pedro Crossing, invites the public to attend its second Book Fair Saturday, October 1, 2011, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

A panel of Hispanic writers will talk about their path to publication and will present their latest works.

San Antonio award-winning children’s writer, Diane Gonzales Bertrand, who has been a supporter of the Society for many years, will open the panel discussion with a Children’s Hour at 1 p.m. She is the author of more than thirty books, children’s picture books and books for young adults. Seven other authors will join Gonzalez Bertrand in what promises to be an entertaining afternoon.

Poet and essay writer Marian Haddad will charm listeners with her down to earth poetry, and authors Martha Caso and Barbara Sonnen-Hernandez, who have written about serious subjects dealing with illnesses and the Mexican-American civil rights struggle, will leave their mark on the public’s heart.

Ani Palacios McBride, whose novel “Nos Vemos en Purgatorio” won first place in the Spanish adventure category of the Twelfth Annual International Latino Books Awards in 2010, will present her third novel, “Plúmbago Torres y el Sueño Americano”. Photographer Steve Valdes, developed and published a planning guide for quinceañeras, a beautiful tradition which celebrates the passing from girlhood to womanhood in the Hispanic culture. Nanette Guadiano and Bertha Jacobson will present a young adult mystery anthology, “You Don’t Have a Clue”, published by Arte Público Press.

“We have been working very hard on this event, and we feel we have a good mix of authors that represent the talents and diversity of the Hispanic culture,” stated SLHWSA president Lupe M. Gonzalez. “The Society’s mission is to inspire, promote and support Hispanic writers. Our vision is to make an impact in the literary world by sharing our culture through our writings as well as to increase literacy.”

The Book Fair will also be an opportunity for the Society to raise funds since Barnes and Noble will donate a percentage of the proceeds to the organization. “This will help us to create more learning activities for our writers,” Gonzalez continued, “as well as to do more outreach in the community.”

Pushcart-nominated poet and writer, Marian Haddad, MFA, is a private manuscript and publishing consultant whose clients have won book and chapbook contests such as The Ashland Poetry Prize, The Texas Review Poetry Prize, The Whitebird Chapbook Contest/Wings Press (2 of the finalists in one year were Haddad's clients/private students: one won the prize, the other was the youngest in the history of that prize's finalists---the 17-year-old was invited to publish her chapook by the press in a non-related form to the prize). Other clients have been semi-finalists for various prizes including The Crab Orchard First Book Award. Many other clients have succeeded in placing their books and chapbooks with various reputable presses, including Pecan Grove Press and Kattywompus Press [tangential connections to Pudding House]. She connected Elroy Bode to Trinity University Press for his critically acclaimed prose collection, IN A SPECIAL LIGHT and Glover Davis to Pecan Grove Press for his critically acclaimed SEPARATE LIVES, though Bode and Davis are her mentors and she merely routed each to the respective presses. Her clients publish frequently in anthologies and journals.

Her chapbook, SATURN FALLING DOWN (2003) was created at the request of Texas Public Radio in correlation with their Hands-on Poetry Workshops, at which she taught. Her first full-length collection, SOMEWHERE BETWEEN MEXICO AND A RIVER CALLED HOME (Pecan Grove Press 2004) approaches its fifth printing, and her latest collection of poetry, WILDFLOWER. STONE. (Pecan Grove Press 2011) is the first hardback in the 24 years of the press. Her work has been published in various journals and literary anthologies in the U.S., Belgium, The U.K., and has been invited for publication in The Middle East.

She has taught American Literature and International Literature at St. Mary's University in San Antonio. She has been hired to offer manuscript consults for Gemini Ink and often blogs for The San Antonio Express News. She was associate editor for POETRY INTERNATIONAL, Vol. III and often judges or screens national, regional, and local poetry and prose contests.

She earned her B.A. in Creative Writing from The University of Texas at El Paso and her M.F.A. in Creative Writing at San Diego State University. She studied The Prose Poem at Emerson College and earned graduate hours in philosophy as an NEH recipient at The University of Notre Dame. She holds a teaching certificate in secondary education and founded and directed The Writing Center at Bowie High School, five minutes from Mexico, in El Paso, Texas. The San Antonio Poets Association begins a new
poetry year this Saturday, September 17. SAPA
meets every third Saturday at the Bethany
Congregational Church at 500 Pilgrim Drive. We
begin the new year by changing our meeting time
to 1:00 p.m.

Come for the poetry, the contests, and fellowship
with other poets. We produce an annual anthology
of members' poems, hold monthly contests judged
by poets of standing from around the state, and
occasionally publish member poems to the website,
SAPA being the only chapter of the Poetry Society
of Texas with an actual website.

Membership is $25 and includes the latest anthology,
a Members' Handbook, and access to the monthly
poetry contests.

Valley Of Tears

Valley of Tears is a complex story of the long journey of individuals
who endure hardship in order to make a better future for their families.
Hart Perry (Director of Photography - "Harlan County, USA"), has
documented the lives of Mexican-American migrant farm workers in
Raymondville, TX since 1979 when the onion workers' strike broke out.
What followed was a fight not only for higher pay but also for equal rights
and representation. For 24 years, the county's Mexican-American residents
were determined to fight for what is right.

Lorna Dee Cervantes, a fifth-generation Californian of Mexican and Native American (Chumash) heritage, is originally from San José, California. She has been published in over 200 anthologies. Emplumada (University of Pittsburgh Press, 1981) was the first of many award-winning publications, for which Cervantes received the American Book Award, the Patterson and the Balcones Prize for best Books of Poetry, the Latino Literature Award, and two Pushcart Prizes.

SLHW Barnes and Noble book fair seeking authors

Fellow Writers,

The Society of Latino and Hispanic Writers of San Antonio, which meets at Barnes and Noble, San Pedro Crossing, wishes to invite members, and other writers in the area, to participate in a Book Fair during Hispanic Heritage Month. The event will also be a fundraiser for the Society and is scheduled for Saturday, October 1st, 2011 in the early afternoon.

Debra Castanon, Community Relations Manager at Barnes and Noble, would like to feature seven to eight writers/members who have published a book in the last twelve months. The authors may talk individually about their book as well as via an author panel discussion.

What is unique about this event is that if you're selected to be one of the authors, and you are self-published, Barnes and Noble will sell your book at the event on consignment. As you're aware, Barnes and Noble has not allowed consignment sales for quite a while so this would be a wonderful chance to not only talk about yourself and your book, but to sell it as well!

The Book Fair is not limited to self-published writers. If you have a book released by a small press or a large publishing house, this is your opportunity to promote your book in the store. If you are selected, Barnes and Noble will order your book if it doesn't already have it in stock.

Since this is in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we would like to strongly encourage Hispanic authors, or authors of books dealing with Hispanic culture, to join us.

A new SLHWSA initiative that we hope will be well received by the members of the association considers opening more opportunities for all of us to read and comment in public our work in progress. Every month on the regular meeting of the second Monday, one of us will be given time to be En la Spotlight and enjoy the honor of being the writer of the month. To be chosen as the writer En la Spotlight one has only to send to Santiago Daydi-Tolson the text to be read and hope to be selected from those applying for the opportunity. The text cannot take more than five minutes of reading time. Our next meeting on Monday September 12 will be the first time we will have one of us En la Spotlight. A call for Volunteer Actors and Reenactors

On November 5th, 2011 on the school grounds of the South Side Independent School District 1460 Martinez-Losoya Road in Losoya Texas Dr Juan Jasso, Superintendent of Schools and the Tejano Genealogy Society of Austin invite you to attend this free event. Battle of Medina Film Productions will be filming the reenactment of the Battle of Medina and is seeking volunteers for the reenactment of the biggest and bloodiest battle ever fought on Texas soil. Recently the State Board of Education approved the addition of the Battle of Medina to the curriculum to be taught in Texas schools and since this school sits on the possible battle site it is appropriate that it be filmed where it occurred ; 23 Years before the Alamo our Tejano ancestors stood and fought to the last man at the Battle of Medina

Actors and reenactors should wear appropriate attire. Tejano’s to wear 1800 Tejano attire, not Texan. Anglo volunteers to wear colonial period attire or frontier dress eg buckskin: Native Americans to wear buckskin or appropriate Native American attire. Spanish and Mexican soldiers are also needed in 1800 military attire with muskets if possible. There will be cannons, muskets, swords and all kinds of early military hardware. This event will be professionally filmed, edited and produced by San Antonio’s TV personality Maclovio Perez and directed and produced by Author and Historian Dan Arellano. Southside High School is located 20 miles south of San Antonio on Hi 281 South and Martinez-Losoya Road.

Featured Reader: Tom Keene

Tom Keene began writing poems in the mid-sixties. His poems have been published in Huehuetitlan Journal, El Placazo, National Catholic Reporter, San Antonio Express-News, Harmony magazine, Latin America Press (Lima, Peru), and The Palo Alto Review. Anthologies include Poets of the Springs and Poets of the River (audiotape). Latitudes Press published his first book of poems, The Waters of Becoming, in 1989. His second book of poems is Flowers for Love Makers, Peace Builders and God Seekers published by Palabras Press.

Keene holds graduate degrees in Applied Theology, Psychology and Religious Studies. Along with others, he helped found the Writers’ Institute at Our Lady of the Lake University. He has worked as a community organizer, advocate for the handicapped, freelance writer, university professor, consultant on nonviolence, and as a child therapist for the San Antonio School District in the Alazan-Apache Courts. He was a founding member of the San Antonio Archdiocesan Justice and Peace Commission. He was also a founding member and officer of the San Antonio Community Radio Corporation, a parent organization of Texas Public Radio and station KSTX. He served as a senior editor of San Antonio’s Voices de la Luna, a poetry magazine.

Got the midsummer blues and need a poem to cheer you up? Look no further: Heather Christle has just what you need.

In an effort to generate publicity for her second volume of poetry, The Trees The Trees (Octopus Books, 2011), Ms. Christle has posted her phone number on the Web site for her book so that visitors to the site can call and get a personal reading from the poet herself.

So far her Google Voice number has been ringing with calls from all over the world and sparking interest in the foreign press, like the Guardian of London.

“I think it’s grown much larger than me and the world,” she said in a brief interview between readings, “Small but exciting things are happening.”

One of her favorite calls came when she answered her phone at a thrift store and heard the voice of Tex Brashear, voice of Cobra Commander, Yogi Bear, and many more classic cartoon characters.

“It was so strange to suddenly hear the voice of Dr. Claw and the Cryptkeeper asking to hear my poetry,” said Ms. Christle, who is Emory University’s creative writing fellow in poetry.

Dear Fellow Writers,
We have a good reason to celebrate: The Society of Latino and Hispanic Writers of San Antonio is turning seven years old this July. This is an opportunity to look back and see what the Society has meant to all of us. Thus, to celebrate our Anniversary we would like to invite all of you to attend our next meeting.

Instead of a guest speaker, we want to hear from members who have furthered their writing career because of the Society. This program will be called:

SHOW AND TELL

If any of your writings have been published in any media (books, e-books, magazines, blogs, newspapers, etc.) in the last 18 months and you feel such accomplishment was in any way related to your association with the Society of Latino and Hispanic Writers of San Antonio, bring your work to SHOW and TELL us all about it. We can all learn from each other’s experiences! (Note: while we can show each other’s work, we will not be able to sell it that night – it is only for showing)

Following the format of Five Minutes with You, we will take turns at sharing. Please don’t read from your work, tell us about your writing career.

Afterwards we can visit with each other and have some cake!
