WHAT: A Community Talk and Block Party welcoming Sheila Black as Executive
Artistic Director. The event will feature open dialogue on creative writing in the community led by Black and showcasing special guest poet Connie Voisine. Enjoy readings, music, refreshments and the company of readers, writers.

WHEN: Friday, September 7, 6:30pm, FREE and Open to the Public

Community Talk will reflect on how creative writing is partly about a dream of freedom and justice-an ideal world; yet must balance this with being truthful in honoring our experience of the world as it is-and the tension between the two.

Sheila Black is the author of two poetry collections, House of Bone and Love/Iraq, (both CW Press). She recently co-edited with poets Jennifer Bartlett and Mike Northen Beauty is a Verb: The New Poetry of Disability (Cinco Puntos Press), named a Notable Book for 2012 by the American Library Association (ALA). A third collection Wen Kroy is forthcoming from Dream Horse Press. She is a 2012 Witter Bynner Fellow in Poetry, selected by recent US Poet Laureate Philip Levine. Connie Voisine is the author of Rare High Meadow of Which I Might Dream, (University of Chicago Press,) a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Award. Her first book, Cathedral of the North, won the Associated Writing Program's Award in Poetry. She has poems published in The Georgia Review, Ploughshares, Poetry Magazine, Black Warrior Review, The Threepenny Review, and elsewhere.
