Guadalupe Garcia McCall Book Presentation

Here is a message about an upcoming event from Debra Castanon who is the Community Relations Manager at the Barnes and Noble in San Pedro Crossings:

Please invite your contacts to a book signing by Guadalupe Garcia McCall for her just released young adult novel, Summer of the Mariposas, on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 2pm here in the store. Her first novel, Under the Mesquite, won the Pura Belpre Award last year. The award is named after Pura Belpré, the first Latina librarian at the New York Public Library. The Pura Belpré Award, established in 1996, is presented annually to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth. It is co-sponsored by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), and REFORMA, the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking, an ALA affiliate.

Here's an overview of Summer of the Mariposas:

Odilia and her four sisters rival the mythical Odysseus in cleverness and courage as they embark on their own hero’s journey. After finding a drowned man floating in their secret swimming hole along the Rio Grande, the sisters trek across the border to bring the body to the man’s family in Mexico. But returning home turns into an odyssey of their own.

Summer of the Mariposas is not just a magical Mexican American retelling of The Odyssey, it is a celebration of sisterhood and maternal love.

Guadalupe is an English and writing teacher at Southwest ISD's McAuliffe Middle School. We will host a Bookfair for the school to coincide with her signing where the school's Mariachi Dulce Alegria will perform and students will present dramatic monologue based on Ms. McCall's book.

I hope that you will be able to attend!

Thanks,
