February Poetry Events

Workshop Saturday, Feb. 2
James Brandenburg, Certified Poetry Therapist and Editor of The Poet Magazine, will offer a workshop on Poetry Therapy at Cha Cha’s Fine Mexican Cuisine (2026 Babcock Rd.) from 2:30 to 5:30 PM on Saturday, Feb. 2,. Mr. Brandenburg will speak about what defines poetry, the uses of poetry therapy, and the process of becoming a poetry therapist. Witnesses will share poems and the healing effects of poetry on their lives. Audience members will be given the opportunity to participate in a writing exercise and to share their results with other participants. Three CEU’s are offered for mental health professionals at the cost of ten dollars.

Workshop Wednesday, Feb. 6
Please join Poetry Therapist James Brandenburg, Editor in Chief of The Poet Magazine, and Josie Mixon, local poet and advocate for abused women and children, in an interactive workshop and open mike at the Fiesta Trails Barnes and Noble near DeZavala and IH 10 from 6 to 9 PM on Wednesday, Feb. 6. Therapists and students from the Battered Women’s Shelter and Tom C. Clark High School students will participate in the workshop and share stories. Audience members are also invited to participate in the workshop. The writing workshop will explore themes relating to violence against others, poets will demonstrate positive ways of critiquing poems, and participants will share their poems in an open mike.

Workshop Saturday, Feb. 9
Please join Poetry Therapist James Brandenburg, Editor in Chief of The Poet Magazine, and Josie Mixon, local poet and advocate for abused women and children, Saturday, Feb. 9, in an interactive workshop (includes therapists and students from the Battered Women's Shelter and Tom C. Clark High School) and Open Mike at the Gallista Art Gallery on South Flores, a few blocks south of South Alamo. The workshop and Open Mike will last from 4 to 6 PM, painter Carol Hoorman will display her cowgirl paintings and speak about self-esteem issues for women from 6 to 7 PM, and Mary Virginia Pittman Waller, wildlife photographer and advocate for wildlife in Kenya, Africa, will display her photography and will speak about her experiences in the African wild.
