Poetry Reading at The Twig--Today
From Bryce Milligan:
Hello all,
Among the considerable number of submissions received here at Wings (just shy of 3,000 in the last 12 months), I occasionally discover an unusually young poet whose work should be celebrated. When it turns out that such a young voice is local, I do what I can. Annie Parker submitted her manuscript, "Remembrance of Rain," to Wings Press's Whitebird chapbook contest last year. Of the hundred or so submissions to this contest received from poets all over the country -- professionals and amateurs, carpenters and academics -- "Remembrance of Rain" turned up in the top ten. That's when we read the names and discovered that Annie was a 17-year-old Senior at TMI here in San Antonio. She is heading to Rice University in the Fall.
Some people criticize early publication -- outside of "student" magazines and anthologies -- as potentially damaging to the creative development of the poet. Bull. Shelley published a Gothic novel, Zastrozzi, in 1810 at the age of 18. Emerson's first published essay appeared in 1822 when he was but 19. John Keats' first published poem appeared in 1816 in Leigh Hunt's The Examiner, when the poet was only 20. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of similar examples. Early publication is simply evidence of talent and will power. This editor is certainly not making any guarantees of literary immortality, but in Remembrance of Rain, this young poet exemplifies a sense of grace and place, of sound and image, and a rather delightful intellect.
Do join us at the Twig for a short reading and signing by Annie Parker. Tuesday, July 21, from 5 to 7 p.m.
