Bihl Haus Arts

Dear Friends of Bihl Haus Arts,

On Saturday, Aug. 28th at 2 pm at Bihl Haus Arts, DAVID S. RUBIN, The Brown Foundation Curator of Contemporary Art at SAMA, will do one of the things that he does best: he'll talk about art! This time with sculptor RAUL CASTELLANOS, whose work--more than 30 assemblage sculptures plus an installation--is on display in the gallery. This is a great opportunity not only to see Raul's show, "Recovery and Recycling," but it is also an opportune moment to learn about it from the inside out, from the artist himself and from the expert on contemporary art in San Antonio.

More. . .

In this dialog, deaf artist Raul Castellanos will explore themes of Recovery—his own from addiction and mental health recovery, the recovery of an ecosystem after the BP oil spill (the subject of his new installation at Bihl Haus), and the perpetual consumption of our society,—and Recycling—of found objects salvaged from trash heaps and gobs of dried paint peeled from the palettes of artist friends and harvested from his ‘Paint Farm’ where he collects recycled paint.

Raul will be speaking with David S. Rubin, an active figure in the contemporary arts field for over thirty years. In September 2006, San Antonio was very fortunate that David assumed the position of The Brown Foundation Curator of Contemporary Art at the San Antonio Museum of Art. He brought to San Antonio his endless fascination with the contemporary art scene and a deep respect for our area artists. Under his tenure at SAMA, he has overseen the brilliant reorganization of the Contemporary collection that now includes major works by some of San Antonio's most important established and emerging artists. Over the years, David has organized numerous solo and thematic exhibitions. His most recent blockbuster exhibition is Psychedelic: Optical and Visionary Art since the 1960s, which is accompanied by a comprehensive best-selling book (co-published by SAMA and MIT Press) on the subject.

So, join us for what we believe will be an absorbing afternoon of art and conversation accompanied, of course, by libations and a little nibble.

See you on Saturday!
Kellen

P.S. Get your Gold on!
