What Makes a Column? The ideas for columns are everywhere. The key is figuring out how to find them and flesh them out. In this three-session class, we will do just that. We will address how to craft your idea into a column, how to find your own voice, and how to strike the right tone for your audience, avoiding the predictability that will make your readers stop reading. Finally, we will address who your audience is so that you can craft your material to their wants and needs. In addition, we will include a brief overview of the history of the column/essay and how it has evolved over time.Instructor: Cary Clack

Storytelling for Nonfiction Writers
Why are stories so powerful? Whether it's personal essays, travel writing, or magazine pieces, the most compelling nonfiction writing tells a story. The same techniques that make fiction writing soar - strong characters, fresh dialogue, a gripping plot - can also make nonfiction writing transcendent. But how do you find meaning and craft narratives from the jumble of "real" life? Borrowing from her experiences with immersion journalism, writer Cecilia Ballí will review the basic elements of story and share ideas for gathering the stories around you. The class will include substantial reading assignments and an optional critique of manuscripts.
