Share Your Thank You Letters

The following request is from Elaine Ayala, Features Writer, San Antonio Express-News:

Dear readers, For a Thanksgiving feature package this month, I'm looking for people who have saved precious thank-you letters in their archives. I'm hoping to find a teacher who held on to a moving letter from a long-ago student, or a nurse who received a thank-you note months or years after caring for a patient. Perhaps you know someone on the police force or a firefighter who received such a note. Maybe there's a sweet, funny note from a child conveying thanks.

Dig them up. I'm fashioning a story around a handful of the best ones I can find. Please feel free to forward this note to other San Antonians and South Texas needed for this feature. Deadline is Nov. 17.

Send copies of letters (not originals), photos and details to: SAY THANK YOU c/o S.A. Life San Antonio Express-News P.O. Box 2171 San Antonio, TX 78297

You may send letters and other materials electronically, with attached JPEG or PDF files, to eayala@express-news.net. Please include your full name and daytime telephone number.

Thanks!

Monday's Meeting

I am pleased to invite you to attend the monthly meeting of the Society of Latino and Hispanic Writers of San Antonio. The meeting will be on Monday, Nov. 10--Marine Corps Birthday!--at the Barnes and Noble, San Pedro Crossing, at 7:30 p.m. This month our guest author is Mary Fechter, who also goes by "MJ."

Using the path of the Hero's Journey, MJ will talk about hero own rocky road to publishing, and give hints she's learned on how to keep going when the publishing business beats you down. The following is from the author's bio:

MJ has been writing forever. In elementary school, she wrote plays and pseudo-Trixie Belden mysteries. After fifth grade, she wrote her first romance, a Grease rip-off. She continued writing serialized stories throughout high school, then went to college and got married. After her son was in kindergarten, she started writing again and joined RWA. Four years later, she got serious and buckled down. Two years after that, she finalled in RWA's Golden Heart in 2003, and the ball started rolling. Even that wasn't the magic touch, and MJ finalled three more times before selling in 2007. After completing 20 manuscripts, her first two books were out within two weeks of each other, and both have firefighter heroes! Where There's Smoke is in print from The Wild Rose Press, and Hot Shot, a romantic suspense, from Samhain Publishing is in ebook now, and print in February 2009. MJ also has a Wayback Texas story from The Wild Rose Press in ebook and an essay in In the Hunt, Unauthorized Essays on Supernatural, available March 2009. Visit MJ at mjfredrick.com and marywritesromance.blogspot.com.

At the meeting, I will also have on hand copies of the voucher that we will be using for the SLHW Bookfair being held at Barnes and Noble, San Pedro Crossing, Nov. 28-29. I will also provide a handout of events going on during the two days. I'm very excited about this event and can't wait toto share the details with you at Monday's meeting.

Finally, please consider signing up for "Cinco Minutos with You!" This event will be held in December and it will allow you to read up to five minutes of your work in progress--please ensure you stay within 5 minutes, we want to ensure everyone has an opportunity to read! Please practice reading your 5 minutes of work so that you stay within your time limit. If you're interested in reading, please send me an email and I will put you on the list.
