IRS Application Update

Here's an update on our 501(c)3 application:

I received a notice on Saturday from the IRS that the fee to process the paperwork has doubled!

I'm telling you, if it ain't one thing, it's another!!! I will send them the rest of the money on payday!

Please note that this is not a call for financial assistance--just an update on where we stand.

One Step Closer

Last night I received correspondence from the Office of the Secretary of State for the State of Texas.

The first paragraph reads:

"It has been our pleasure to file the certificate of formation and issue the enclosed certificate of filing evidencing the existence of the newly created nonprofit corporation."

We are now recognized as a nonprofit corporation by the State of Texas! Now we just need to hear back from the IRS on our 501(c)3 request!

Thank you to everyone who has supported our Society--the best is yet to come!

A Reading in Honor of William Stafford and His Necessary Voice:
To Toast His Birth and a New Year of Hope
Organized by Naomi Shihab Nye

Readings by a circle of citizens, including Rosemary Catacalos, Robert Bonazzi, Ignacio Magaloni, Naomi Shihab Nye, and others.

William Stafford was born in Hutchison, Kansas, the oldest of three children in a highly literate family. Stafford helped contribute to the family income by delivering newspapers, working in the sugar beet fields, and working as an electrician's mate. During World War II, he was a conscientious objector and worked in civilian public service camps. His first major work, Traveling Through the Dark, was published when Stafford was forty-eight. It won the National Book Award in 1963. He went on to publish more than sixty-five volumes of poetry and prose. In 1970 he was the Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress (a position currently known as the Poet Laureate).

Happy New Year!

Fellow Writers,

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you a Happy and Prosperous 2008!

Our Society has been in existence for three and a half years and still going strong. This is a definite reflection on all the hard work, patience and understanding that you--our members--have shown in not only wanting to be part of a writers' group, but are also willing to become actively involved in ensuring the Society continues meeting the needs of San Antonians and the citizens of the surrounding community. A sincere "Thank You" for everything you do.

As I write this entry, we have a 501(c)3 application pending review with the IRS and an Article of Incorporation for Non-Profits pending with the State of Texas. I will keep you updated on both as I receive updates from these two agencies.

I just sent an email to the Society's Leadership 2008 Group notifying them about Leadership meetings for the first half of 2008. All our meetings are open to everyone and you don't have to be a "Leader" to attend! Your input is valued and greatly appreciated.

Meetings will be held at the Barnes and Noble (Fiesta Trails), located at IH 10 and De Zavala on Saturdays at 9 a.m. Meeting dates are:

January 12
March 8
May 10

I'm looking forward to a wonderful 2008 for the Society of Latino and Hispanic Writers of San Antonio!

Keep Writing.
