VIA Poetry Contest

VIA’S POETRY CONTEST BEGINS OCTOBER 1

VIA Metropolitan Transit will begin its 2011 poetry contest earlier this year to allow time to coordinate with other art programs.

Called “Poetry on the Move,” the contest is open to anyone over 18 years of age in Central and South Texas (except for VIA employees and their families), and entries can be sent in beginning October 1 and running through November 17. The winning poetry will be displayed on VIA buses and vans during National Poetry Month in April 2011.

Contestants can submit up to three poems each, and the works must be understandable by a wide audience, free of any offensive language, and without obscure references. Entries should be mailed to VIA Metropolitan Transit c/o Jerri Ann Jones, Public Affairs, P.O. Box 12489, San Antonio, Texas 78212. Submissions should be postmarked by November 17, 2010, and winners will be notified before their work is published in VIA’s fleet.

To be eligible, each poem should be typed or printed and sent by mail. No fax or e-mail submissions will be accepted. Each poem needs to be ten lines or shorter (including the title and spaces), and the author’s name or any other identifying information cannot appear on the poems themselves.

Contestants should include a cover letter that contains the title (or first line) of each poem; name, address, and telephone number of the author; a one-line bio; and a signed permission line that reads: “I hereby give VIA Metropolitan Transit permission to use my poem(s) on their buses, vans, or other agency publications as well as in National Poetry Month San Antonio publicity.”

Poets will retain all rights for future publication. All poems must be original work and cannot have been previously published. The poems themselves will not be returned, but the winners will be notified by mail.

In addition to being displayed on VIA’s fleet, the winning poems will also be recorded in the authors’ voices and made available through Refarm Spectacle, and they will be given to five teen youth art programs to create designs for the bus interior cards.

Awaken the Sleeping Poet

From Floyd Lamrouex:

Awaken the Sleeping Poet, Barnes & Noble
Sorry for the late notice, but it will be a memorable night...
This week, Thursday, October 28th, featuring
Harold Warford, and Margaret Mayberry

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Harold Warford

Harold Warford is a retired attorney who is one of the funniest poets you'll ever meet. His stories about his clients and his law practice will have you rolling in the aisles with laughter. Call him crusty, or salty, or dry wit, but he is hilarious. It's a true treat to have Harold as a featured reader this Thursday.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Margaret Mayberry

Margaret Mayberry is another poet who will have you laughing with her poetry. Her wit and unique perspective about everyday events will keep you laughing. She'll also be reading some serious poems, but come expecting to be entertained by these two marvelous poets.

I know it's late notice, and for that I apologize. A heavy caseload has cut in on my time to promote my venues. But you will be doing yourself a disservice if you miss this Thursday night. It will be one of the best nights of the year. Guaranteed. FLL

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Margaret and Harold will begin at 7:00
Open Mic begins at 8:00
Then encore poems by our featured readers at 8:50

Northwoods Barnes and Noble
281 and 1604, Henderson Pass Exit

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bring yourself; bring a friend; bring a poem!
See you Thursday!

Jackie Mendez Online Blog Tour

Friends and family,

Just wanted to let you know that today I am doing an online blog tour with Teens Read Too at http://trtbookclub.blogspot.com/2010/10/visit-with-jax.html

They did a book review awhile back on my novel and they will be featuring it all day today on their site. They are also holding a contest and giving away three of my novels to anyone who posts on that blog. I don't know how they judge it, but they will announce the winners at the end of the day.

Their interview questions were a blast to answer. Stop by and visit with me, and feel free to post any questions or comments you may have, as I'll be there all day. Your support and sharing of this information is also appreciated.

Love and blessings,
Jacqueline Mendez,

alurista and Aztlan Libre Press

From Juan Tejeda, regarding alurista and Aztlan Libre Press:

Saludos. On behalf of alurista and Aztlan Libre Press, Anisa, Maya Quetzalli and I would like to thank you for your participation in coordinating the alurista Tunaluna Texas Tour in your city. We are very grateful to you and all of our camaradas in the different cities who hosted us, drove us, took us to eat, partied with us, and invited us into their chantes, como familia, to spend the night, or just to visit for a while.

The tour was a tremendous success. We sold over $3,100.00 of Tunaluna books and alurista did 17 different readings, workshops and presentations in seven cities: San Antonio, Seguin, Harlingen, Edinburg, Laredo, Austin and Houston. This was a true collaboration among universities, colleges and community-based businesses and organizations. Thanks to our friends at the University of Texas at San Antonio, Gemini Ink, Palo Alto College, Texas Lutheran University, Proyecto Libertad, the University of Texas-Pan Am Library, Laredo Community College, Laredo Center for the Arts, the University of Texas at Austin, Austin Community College, Resistencia Bookstore, the University of Houston, Nuestra Palabra, and Casa Ramirez. It was a great networking tour, reconnecting us with old friends, and making new ones in the process.

alurista, ever the showman and master poeta, did some amazing readings, workshops and presentations. We got some great press and there were some magical moments that I was very fortunate to have captured in photographs and video. Check out www.aztlanlibrepress.com to view a couple of videos and photos from the tour, one at our home entitled "Menudo con Frijoles," and alurista reading "El Plan Espiritual de Aztlan," with me on the flute, at the Indigenous Day March for Human Rights in San Antonio. If there was any follow-up press, pictures, reviews, or interviews and videos that were done in your city, we would appreciate you sending us a copy of it for our, and alurista's, records.

Muchisimas gracias por todo, and may the Creator bless you and your familias hoy y para siempre.

su carnal,
juan

Danville Chadbourne

DANVILLE CHADBOURNE
Opening Reception: Friday, October 22, 5:30-8:30 pm

Dear Friends of Bihl Haus Arts,

Sacred ritual, space and time, ancestor worship, consecrated rites of passage . . . Explore these themes and more at the opening reception for sculptor DANVILLE CHADBOURNE at Bihl Haus Arts, this Friday, October 22, 5:30-8:30 pm.

Danville’s fetishized, ritualized objects stir a collective memory and connect us as human beings to a primordial past. At once universal truth and private fiction, his sculptures are the constructs of an erudite artist with broad experience in and of the world. They spring from deep within the artist’s fecund imagination and are inspired by his appreciation for the material culture and ancient traditions of indigenous peoples, about which our knowledge is only fragmentary. The artist deconstructs archetypes and reassembles their parts into paradoxical and enigmatic imagery open to individual interpretation. “It is my intention,” says Chadbourne, “to provoke questions, suggest possibilities, and ultimately elicit responses that are more than just intellectual. I want the viewer to feel something.”

In this selection of the sculptor’s work, muted warm sepia tones of worn woods bathed in brown paints predominate. They contrast with passages of subdued complimentary colors: red and green, blue and orange, black and white. Decoration is restricted to incised channels and grooves, shallow pecked recesses, and natural nodes and knots accentuated by hand carving. Typical shapes include long narrow flat planks and shallow rectangular boxes constructed from recovered wood, sometimes joined by staples and brads made of recycled copper wire. Danville deliberately weathers and unites the surfaces of these disparate recovered materials, often already weather beaten, with paint applied in layers and scrubbed by hand between coats with rough sandpaper, a process that visually ages the work. “All things are in constant flux, acted upon by the process of aging and deterioration,” Danville avers, “a process that is observable and that dictates the passage of time”; the artist’s work not only suggests but becomes part of a continuum.

Danville Chadbourne was born in Bryan, Texas in 1949. He received a BFA in 1971 from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, and an MFA in 1973 from Texas Tech University in Lubbock. After teaching studio art and art history at the college level for 17 years at various institutions, Danville left teaching in 1989 to devote himself full-time to his art. He has exhibited extensively at both state and national levels, including more than 60 one-person exhibitions. His work is found in numerous private and public collections. He has lived in San Antonio since 1979.

We hope to see you Friday night!

Kellen

P.S. Please save the date: Saturday, December 11, 2 pm: a Bihl Haus Dialog with Anthropologist Megan Biesele, PhD, and Sculptor Danville Chadbourne. Megan Biesele, who received her PhD in social anthropology from Harvard University in 1975, has spent the past 40 years working in the areas of language development and human rights of the peoples of Botswana and Namibia, southern Africa. In 2000 she received the Lucy Mair Medal for Applied Anthropology from the Royal Anthropological Institute, London. Biesele is the author of numerous books, including Shaken Roots: Bushmen of Namibia Today (1990), “Women Like Meat”: The Folklore and Foraging Ideology of the Kalahari Ju/’hoan (1993), and Hunters and Gatherers in the Modern World: Conflict, Resistance, and Self-Determination (2000).

Jordan Dane's Gemini Ink Workshop

From Gemini Ink:

Hello,

Hello. Hope you’re doing well. I wanted to thank you for your continued support of Gemini Ink. Your frequent posts about our classes and events really do help us.

The last SLHW meeting I attended, y’all mentioned Jordan Dane being an upcoming guest speaker. I’m not sure if this has happened already, but if not we urge you to spread the word about Dane’s upcoming workshop. We think SLHW members might be interested in an upcoming young adult writing-themed workshop with Dane.

Dane will conduct a one-day workshop focusing on the basics of writing for the young adult market. In the Arms of Stone Angels (Harlequin Teen, 2011) will be the first of two young adult novels written by Dane. Although she broke into the scene as a suspense novelist, Dane has found herself dabbling in both writing markets. She shows a tremendous passion and dedication to the craft, and is prepared to share her whirlwind journey of becoming a published writer to those who attend the workshop.

If you or anyone you know is interested in signing up for the workshop, please note we do offer a limited amount of scholarships. I’ve attached a scholarship form for your convenience.

Below is a course description:

Writing for the Young Adult Market: Where Do I Begin?
Level: All
Instructor: Jordan Dane

Interested in writing for one of the hottest genres in the publishing industry? Young adult novelist Jordan Dane shares what she’s learned about trends / themes / subgenres in the Young Adult market, the unique voice, how to create believable characters, and where to get ideas for books targeting teens 12-18 years old. This two-hour discussion workshop will be geared for aspiring authors and published authors wanting to learn about YA. And for three attendees, Jordan will provide a first chapter critique. Names will be drawn during the workshop and after winners provide their first chapter via email, Jordan will send written feedback within two weeks of submission.

News from Gemini Ink

From Gemini Ink:

I just wanted to send y’all a quick announcement about Bobby and Lee Byrd of Cinco Punto Press visiting San Antonio this weekend. They’re conducting multiple workshops and consultations this weekend, all of which will interest SLHW members!

If you or other group members would like to register for any (or all!) class(es), let us know! Keep in mind we have a few available scholarships. For your convenience, I have attached a scholarship form. If you’re interested in applying for a scholarship, contact our University Without Walls interim director, Daniel Torres at uww@geminiink.org

Making Poems from the Right Side of Your House

Level: All

Instructor: Bobby Byrd

We all come to making poems with certain rigid ideas about what a poem is – how it should act out in public. What should these word things do for us? Writing lyric poetry, poems about ourselves and our lives, makes our poems even more susceptible to sentimentality and our personal hang-ups. Lyric poems can end up like children: the only person not bothered by them is the poet. Thus, in our workshop our everyday lives will be the subjects of our poems, but we will let participants be free with their language and their poetry. We’ll try to quit worrying about what a poem MEANS. Let it mean what it means. We’ll have fun and play with the language. Anything might happen on the way to the poem. But always the content of the poem will be our own lives.

Date: Saturday, Oct. 9, 10am – noon

Limit: 15 Participants

Registration Deadline EXTENDED: Friday, Oct. 8

Teachers CPE Credits: 2 Language Arts

Discounted Fee: $58

Curious what publishers look for when they acquire manuscripts? Or what they see when they see your manuscript? Publisher Lee Byrd of Cinco Puntos Press has been in the publishing business for 25 years. She and her husband Bobby Byrd have developed their own unique vision of publishing. Lee doesn’t always know what she’s looking for, but when she sees a manuscript with a certain quality, she knows she’s found it! This workshop will help you to think more about the mysterious alchemy between a manuscript and an editor, with an eye to helping you get your own work published.

Date: Saturday, Oct. 9, 10am – noon

Limit: 15 Participants

Bihl Haus Arts Celebration

Dear Friends of Bihl Haus Arts,

Friday night is going to be an amazing evening at Bihl Haus Arts. We are celebrating our 5th year in existence! We can’t believe it either! To celebrate we are going to hold our first-ever silent auction. But it won’t be just any silent auction. At auction will be hard-bound copies of the book "Golondrina, why did you leave me?" by author Barbara Renaud Gonzalez, embellished by more than 40 amazing San Antonio artists, including Danville Chadbourne, Joan Frederick, Angel Rodriguez-Diaz, David Zamora Casas, Jane Madrigal, John Davis, Franco Mondini-Ruiz, Jimena Marin, Kat Brown, and many more! They're painting, drawing, and adding photos and objects to the books in singular ways. The books began arriving at Bihl Haus yesterday, and they are gorgeous, and sensuous, and funny, and charming, and poignant. One even talks! I could go on and on. . . Add all of this visual art to Barbara's passionate prose, and you've got the absolutely perfect blend of art and text that would make an extraordinary gift or a beautiful one-of-a-kind addition to your library or art collection.

This auction will be a wonderful event and fundraiser for Bihl Haus Arts. Funds raised will help support Bihl Haus Arts programming. So, please join us this FRIDAY, OCTOBER 8, from 6 to 9+ pm for our first-ever silent auction.

Cocktails and bidding begin at 6:00 pm. The evening includes antojitos, música y mas! At 7:30 Barbara will read a fiery excerpt from her novel to the jazzy strains of percussionist Joaquin Abrego. Bidding closes at 8:30, followed by the big finale when actors recreate the titillating salsa-rumba-tango-flamenco “Golondrina” dance scene. The evening culminates with poolside (weather permitting) dancing to the sensational hip hop infused rock and Latin rhythms of Los Nahuatlatos. Oh, and birthday cake, too! So, get your dancing shoes on, bring your wallets and checkbooks, and join us for a dazzling celebration of text, art, music, food, dance, and 5 years of outstanding programming at Bihl Haus Arts this Friday, October 8th, starting at 6 pm. Suggested donation: $5.00
