From Bihl Haus Arts

Dear Friends of Bihl Haus Arts,

Get ready to satisfy your literary appetite at Bihl Haus Arts’ first SMALL PRESS BOOK FAIR, this Saturday, March 27, 1-4 pm! San Antonio’s amazing small presses—Wings Press, Pecan Grove, and School by the River Press—will be joined by Austin’s Dos Gatos Press and poetry journals Voices de la Luna (San Antonio) and The Enigmatist (Georgetown, TX). These amazing resources support our area’s burgeoning literary scene by promoting local authors and publishing books you just can’t get at big box bookstores.

This leisurely afternoon of book browsing and buying will be punctuated by the WORDWORKERS POETRY READING with authors Martha K. Grant, Assef al-Jundi, Ignacio Magaloni, Josie Mixon, Jim LaVilla-Havelin, David Meischen, Scott Wiggerman, Mike Gullickson, Lesley Clark, Carolyn Patteson Sanchez, Palmer Hall, and Roberto Bonazzi.

The BIHL HAUS SMALL PRESS BOOK FAIR, organized by Jim LaVilla-Havelin, takes place in conjunction with the photo exhibit WOODWORKERS, intimate portraits of 22 San Antonio authors by Melanie Rush Davis, which continues at Bihl Haus through April 17th. The portraits, taken with the pinhole camera, pair with writings literally scrawled on the gallery walls by the authors themselves: Grisel Acosta, Roberto Bonazzi, Jenny Browne, Rosemary Catacalos, Sandra Cisneros, Nan Cuba, Cyra Dumitru, Martha K. Grant, Palmer Hall, Jim LaVilla-Havelin, Marian Haddad, Assef al-Jundi, Bryce Milligan, Ignacio Magaloni, Josie Mixon, Naomi Shihab Nye, Carol Coffee Reposa, John Phillip Santos, Vincent Toro, Carmen Tafolla, and Mobi Warren.

So, bring your literary appetite and cash or check—most participants will not have the capability to process card transactions—and come support San Antonio’s authors and the spectacular small presses that publish them.

Kellen

P.S. This is an official National Poetry Month 2010 San Antonio event, which is co-sponsored by Bihl Haus Arts and funded in part by the San Antonio Office of Cultural Affairs. For a full schedule, please go to: http://www.sahearts.com/SpecialEvents/PoetryMonth2010/tabid/196/Default.aspx

A Letter to the Editor

I wanted to share with you a Letter to the Editor that appeared in Friday's San Antonio Express-News:

Beer, why not books?

I'm pleased that we celebrate the arts with Luminarias, and I congratulate all the organizers for their hard work. But one question: Why is it OK to sell beer but not books?

Unlike the beer industry, small-presses do not gain a profit from the sale of their books. Creating an outlet for them to sell their books would help local writers, local presses and local readers, especially since most books by small-press writers are hard to find.

Since we no longer have a citywide book fair, Luminarias would be a good opportunity for books to be made available. Please consider this in the future.

Sandra Cisneros

Wouldn't it be great to bring back a citywide book fair?

Remember El Alma

Dear Friends of Bihl Haus Arts,

What an amazing performance you’ll be able to witness on Saturday night! As part of Luminaria, BIHL HAUS ARTS is producing “REMEMBER EL ALMA/REMEMBER YOUR SOUL.” This performance--a mosaic of original prose, movement, song, and live projection--transforms the Alamo from a monument to war to one of peace. “Remember El Alma” is directed by Virginia (Vicki) Grise, recipient of the prestigious Yale Drama Award for 2010, who adapted the original prose-poem by Barbara Renaud-Gonzalez, finalist for the 2010 Texas Institute of Letters Award. And, Dr. Rachel Cruz, who possesses one of the most powerful voices I have ever heard, performs original music and lyrics. These exceptionally gifted women are joined by five amazing principal actresses--Olupero R. Aiyenimelo, Marisela Barrera, Monique Cortez, Natalie Goodnow, and Saray Rosales--and a supporting cast of more than 100 women, the “Almas," including our fabulous Bihl Haus Docents, who come to mourn the dead and celebrate the birth of the possible. And if that weren't enough, Vicki enlisted the technical expertise of E. Martin Gimenez, who works with the Los Angeles Opera, to design the video and real-time projections!

So, slip into some comfortable walking shoes and join us downtown on Saturday, March 13th, at 9:30 pm, on Hemisphere's Plaza de Mexico (the patio between the Instituto Cultural Mexicano and the back of the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center), and plan to be enthralled and inspired by this thought-provoking and moving work of art.

For lots more about Vicki Grise and "Remember El Alma," read Sarah Fisch's excellent interview in this week's Current at http://www.sacurrent.com/arts/story.asp?id=71001 "Remember El Alma was also spotlighted in the Sunday Express News article on Luminaria: http://www.mysanantonio.com/entertainment/This_years_Luminaria_will_be_less_sprawling.html

Kellen

"Remember El Alma," produced by Bihl Haus Arts, is supported in part by the San Antonio Office of Cultural Affairs. Special thanks to the Luminaria Committee for selecting this project, and to Henry Brun and his crew for their technical expertise and support. Bihl Haus Arts is a not-for-profit contemporary art gallery located on the premises of Primrose at Monticello Park Senior Apartments, an affordable housing community. The gallery, open Fridays and Saturdays, 1-4 pm, is made possible with the generous support of The Potashnik Family Foundation and Primrose.
