Bihl Haus Event

From our friends at Bihl Haus Arts:

Dear Friends of Bihl Haus Arts,

A story has been going around for years about the Bihl House--that its great stone walls hide a precious treasure. Well, the story is absolutely TRUE! Its walls do hold our most cherished treasure: our Volunteers--the ones who oversee the guest book, serve food and drink, host on opening nights, and staff the gallery on Friday and Saturday afternoons. These essential volunteers are the Bihl Haus Docents, residents of Primrose who donate their time—hundreds of hours each year—to help keep Bihl Haus open and running smoothly. But did you know that many of them also have secret lives? Well they do! And now it’s time to let their secret out: most are also artists and poets and writers—the Goldens—passionate about paint and canvas, paper and pen. And their passion is showing; it’s literally all over the walls at Bihl Haus.

So, come celebrate the opening reception of “Golden Treasures,” this Saturday, May 21, from 4 to 6 pm. On exhibit will be more than 100 small works—many for sale (100% of the sale price goes to the artist)—produced by the Goldens (most live at Primrose) over the past year, plus fiber foodworks and a 15-foot mural! Juror Deborah Kuetzplain Vasquez will be on hand to award prizes and ribbons and you can help her by casting your vote ($1 per ballot) for the People’s Choice Award.

We’ll also be honoring the contributions of the fabulous Bihl Haus Arts Docents at this event. So, if you love the Bihl Haus and you love our Goldens and our Docents--Bihl Haus can’t do what it does without them!--then this is the time to express your thanks for all they do by attending this Saturday afternoon event. Bar-b-que, libations, surprise guest performances, and more!

Kellen

P.S. And please consider joining us for the Golden’s first off-campus poetry and prose reading at the Twig Book Shop, 5005 Broadway, on Thursday, May 26, 5-7 pm, organized by Barbara Renaud Gonzalez.

P.S.S. The publication of the catalog that accompanies this exhibit was made possible by the WellMed Charitable Foundation. Artwork on exhibit was produced over the past year by Goldens enrolled in the Bihl Haus “GO! Arts Program,” sponsored in part by the Genevieve and Ward Orsinger Foundation, Greehey Family Foundation, Shield-Ayres Foundation, Potashnik Family Foundation, Alice Kleberg Reynolds Mayer Foundation, Dougherty Foundation, Texas Commission on the Arts through the San Antonio Office of Cultural Affairs, and Primrose at Monticello Park Senior Apartments.

Valerie Bailey Update from Floyd

Thank you for your prayers and good thoughts for Valerie, because she is doing fine after the procedure. The artery was only 30-40% blocked, and so they did not stent it. The procedure was a success, and she's recovering right now, flat on her back, which is painful for her and her only discomfort. When she can sit up straight, she'll be much more comfortable, and she only has a couple of hours to go until they let her sit up. Thank you again for all the prayers and well wishes. She's happy because the doctor gave her a tentative OK on going to the NFSPS Convention in June. Thank you and God bless all of you.

Poetry Reading

From Josie Mixon,

Good Day My Fellow Poets,

We got rain!!!!! Finally... Well hopefully there will be more to come. In the mean time poetry will rain on us at Barnes and Noble, Ingram Festival, on Wednesday, May 18th. We begin with a wonderful Poetry Workshop with Jim Brandenburg at 6:00pm followed by open mic at 7:00pm. I may not be present for this event because I am attempting to attend a Writing Workshop in New Mexico.

Our special guest Glenn Hughes will present at 8:00pm.
Please read bio below.

Glenn “Chip” Hughes is the author of two poetry chapbooks, Sleeping at the Open Window (2005) and Erato (2010), both published by Pecan Grove Press ( San Antonio ). Since 1977 his poems have appeared in national literary journals such as Poetry Northwest, Poetry East, Prairie Schooner, Atlanta Review, Poets West, and numerous other publications. He has been a featured poetry reader at various art and poetry festivals, and at museum, bookstore, and university readings, in Texas , Washington State , New Mexico , and elsewhere.

He enjoyed a thirty-year friendship with the “unoffical Poet Laureate of the Pacific Northwest,” Robert Sund, who before his death in 2001 asked him to serve, together with poet Tim McNulty, as a literary editor of his estate. With McNulty, he co-edited Sund’s collected poems and translations, Poems from Ish River Country, published by Shoemaker & Hoard in 2003. Subsequently he edited Taos Mountain: Poems and Paintings, by Robert Sund (Poet’s House Press: 2007). He is currently working with McNulty on a new chapbook of Sund’s poetry, drawn from private journals, scheduled to be published in 2011.

He is also the author or editor of five books of philosophy, including the forthcoming A More Beautiful Question: The Spiritual in Poetry and Art (University of Missouri Press, May 2011). In 2008 he received a Fulbright Scholar Research Grant to study at the International Peace Research Institute of Oslo (PRIO).

Glenn Hughes grew up in Seattle , and living subsquently in Switzerland , Wales , the Skagit Valley of Washington State, Boston, and San Antonio, where he presently teaches at St. Mary’s University. He holds a degree in English Literature and advanced degrees in History and Philosophy. Before becoming a professor he made his living variously as a printing pressman, a taxi driver, a musician, a housepainter, a wooden-boat refinisher, a documentary film sound recordist, an assistant librarian, a hospital environmental services coordinator, and a shampoo delivery truck driver.

It will be a fabulous evening of poetry. Come join us and read your heart out!

Con Carino,

Josie Mixon

Mary Lou published in Tonantzin Magazine

Here's a note I received from Mary Lou Barrera--Mary Lou, we are all proud of you!:

Hi Vincent,

Just a note to let you know that a short story I wrote titled, El Mosquito Americano, is currently being featured in Tonantzin Magazine in conjunction with the 30th Tejano Conjunto Festival. This year, the editor, Juan Tejeda, has included more stories, poems, and memoirs from Latina/o writers with a Tejano background. It makes interesting reading, and an introduction into the world of conjunto music. It salutes three great figures of the conjunto genre, plus short bios and pictures of enough musical groups are included to satisfy the soul of any conjunto fanatic.

The magazine can be obtained at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, 1300 Guadalupe St, San Antonio, Texas. Phone number-210/271-3151, www.guadalupeculturalarts.org

Thanks,
Mary Lou Barrera

Monday's SLHW Meeting

Lupe Ruiz-Flores, www.luperuiz-flores.com author of three picture books and a forthcoming one in the fall, will do a mini-workshop on “Writing Picture Books” on May 9, 2011, at the 7:30 p.m. regular meeting of the Society of Latino and Hispanic Writers at Barnes & Noble, San Pedro Crossing.

Her workshop will focus on touching young people’s lives and telling a story with pictures (she is not an illustrator). Writing for children can be just as challenging as writing for adults. She will talk about where she gets the ideas for her books, how to grow an idea into a story, how to write engaging stories that inspire the reader, and the collaboration between the author and illustrator.

Lupe has conducted writing workshops for OASIS, for Youth Writer Camps, and for middle-grade students. She has been a featured author at the Texas Book Festival twice. At present, she is the newsletter editor for the San Antonio chapter of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) and a frequent participant in the Writers in Schools for Enrichment (WISE) Project sponsored by the Writers’ League of Texas in Austin. Copies of her books will be available for sale at the meeting.
