Tips from Omni Book Publishing

From:
PUBLISHING TIPS FROM
OMNI BOOK PUBLISHING

Where do book titles come from?

Karrie Ross, Book Designer, says: "Finding the right title for your book can be challenging. A title is the purpose of your book and is important that it presents your book's subject in the best way possible. It must grab your audiences attention, make them question and think and act by picking up the book and start reading... end eventually buy it."

You may already have an idea of what you want to name your story and that may be exactly the right title, but before you place it where it belongs in the story stop and give it a second thought.
Create phrases of three-five words, look at them and keep reqoerking them until you find the right combination - a winning combination!

Think also about the audience for the book: interests, mind-set, demographic.
I always remember an episode of the English comedy "As Time Goes By" when the character Lionel Hardcastle, wonderfully portrayed by Geoffrey Palmer, was asked about the book he had written and he said it was called "My Life in Kenya", and the other person said, "And what is it about?", to which he answered, "My life in Kenya..." and you can almost heard the "Duh" at the end of his sentence.

A Small Publisher Advantage
Several larger publishers are saving money by cutting back the production quality. Most are using a cheap looking, nearly wood-pulp paper thus making their books look cheaper.
Smaller publishers are maintaining production values. Many are increasing the brightness of their white paper from 88 to 94 or even 96.

When books are compared in a bookstore, the smaller publishers have a decided advantage: their books simply look better.

Visit a bookstore and check quality paper yourself.

The Right Publisher
How do you decide which is the best publisher for your book? I know that for many authors, price is a deciding issue, but what about one who keeps you informed about the status of your book and is available through telephone or email whenever you want to check?

There is a publishing company that states in their publishing contract that authors should not contact them, that the publisher will contact the author if need be - something like "don't call us, we'll call you" - and they sound almost annoyed at the idea of giving information to someone who trusted them with their brain child and paid money for its publication.

If you have encountered one of those publishers, the best way to communicate is via email (and keep copies of those emails), and if still don't receive information you should know it's time to change publishing houses.

The author should always have the right to inquire how his book is coming along, even if it's to hear that it's in the hands of the Interior Book Designer, or the Graphic Designer, or it's being sent to the binder soon. Of course, calling every day is not kosher, so trust your publisher. Sometimes office personnel is busy and cannot stay on line answering questions that were answered two days ago.

If there is a problem with a given date, the publisher should contact the author and explain the delay and what is being done to solve the problem.

Have you read our blogs?
With the help of Lori, our Interior Book Designer, we have been publishing a blog under different topics. Find it at http://omnibookpublishing.blogspot.com/

Here's looking at you and wishing you a good writing day!

The Texas After Violence Project

From Virgina Marie Raymond:

Dear friends and colleagues,

I’m writing to invite you to a information and planning meeting that will take place
at the University of the Incarnate Word on Friday, October 2, from 1 – 3 p.m., and
to invite you to lend your creativity, energy, ideas, and time to an oral history
project concerning serious violence and its effects in our communities.

The Texas After Violence Project is an independent, non‐profit organization that
studies the effects of serious violence, including the death penalty in Texas by
conducting qualitative research, especially oral histories with persons directly
touched by these events and processes; shares these stories as widely as possible
consistent with the express instructions oft he narrators; and promotes collective,
critical and constructive conversations about the most effective ways to prevent
and respond to violence. Although we seek to minimize violence and promote
transformative justice, the Texas After Violence Project is not an advocacy group.
Rather, we listen for a change.

Currently based in Austin, the project has conducted close to sixty interviews in a
little over a year. We have listened to parents, siblings, and intimate friends of
murder victims; parents, siblings, and intimate friends of executed persons; law
enforcement officials; clergy and lay religious people; media witnesses to
executions; lawyers; and others.

We have been deeply moved by what we have learned, and want to share these
stories – at the time and in the manner approved by oral history narrators. Some
narrators have already released their stories to the public; you can read brief
portions of seven interviews on our website at
http://www.texasafterviolence.org/watch.and.listen. Other narrators are still
reviewing their stories: some will donate the stories to the project for noncommercial
educational purposes now or at some point in the future, and a few may
decide, for personal reasons that we respect, to keep their experiences private.

The Digital Human Rights Initiative of the University of Texas Library System has
agreed to host those oral histories that narrators have agreed to make public, so that
people anywhere in the world who have access to the internet will be able to listen
to these stories. We hope that policy makers, clergy, poets, artists, novelists,
psychologists, teachers, students, neighborhood activists, police officers, and
families will listen to these stories and use them as they (we) all work towards
reducing violence and promoting justice. We are already working towards the first
set of community conversations, which will take place in October, and look forward
to collaborating with other community organizations, religious congregations,
schools, and neighborhoods in the months and years to come.

Would you be interested in joining our work, suggesting how we might do it
better, or adapting our ideas to San Antonio? The University of the Incarnate
Word has graciously agreed to host a reception and organizing meeting on Friday,
October 2, from 1--3 p.m. Meet us the McCreless Heritage Room, Room 155, on
the first floor of the Administration Building, on the Incarnate Word campus
at 4301 Broadway, San Antonio, 78209 (northeast corner of Broadway and
Hildebrand). The Administration Building, marked #12 on the attached campus
map, is the big building facing Broadway (east), with the water fountain in front.
Parking on Friday afternoons is generally available in the area in front and on the
sides of the building. We will serve light refreshments.

We hope that you will share this invitation with your colleagues and friends who
may also be interested in “listening for a change” – not by pushing our ideological
beliefs on others, but by listening careful to other people’s experiences, and then
looking for common ground. Please call or write with your questions, or come meet
us in person next week! We look forward to seeing you on Friday, October 2, at
1:00 p.m.

Thanks for your attention.
Sincerely,
Virginia

Poetry in the Spirit of Trino

From Bihl Haus Arts:

Dear Friends of Bihl Haus Arts,

The spirit of Trino--Trinidad Sanchez, Jr. (1943-2006)--is ALIVE through poetry at Bihl Haus Arts this Friday night, Sept. 25th, starting at 6:30 pm. We've opened the gallery to the American Indians of Texas at the Spanish Colonial Missions (AIT-SCM) for a commemorative reading al Estilo Trino--in the style of Trino--and boy did he have great style and presence with a voice that spoke across generations, racial and cultural lines, and economic divides.

Poets Andrea Greimel, Ramon Vasquez, and Santiago Garcia will read (perform, really) their moving, funny, ironic, witty poems with all the gusto of mentor Trinidad Sanchez. And if you ever heard Trino read at Bihl Haus, or anywhere else (he was known throughout the U.S. and beyond), you know exactly what I mean.

Trino was our very first volunteer at Bihl Haus. We knew from the moment he entered the gallery in summer 2005 that someone extraordinary had just walked in. He devotion and dedication to poetry set Bihl Haus Arts on a passionate course to support San Antonio's amazing poets. So, please come enjoy poetry at its finest--al Estilo Trino, of course! Andrea, Ramon, and Santiago will be joined by members of the way-too-cool Jazz Poets Society and Writers Blk. Old friends will be dropping in for open-mic.

See you Friday!

September Events

Fellow Writer,

September brings a wealth of events to the Society of Latino and Hispanic Writers of San Antonio thanks to the celebration of Hispanic Heritage month nationwide.

Our staunch supporters--Barnes and Noble, San Pedro Crossing and La Cantera--have generously offered to host two fundraising events for us, but it will require us to do a lot of promotion to our family, friends and colleagues.

ARTIST FOUNDATION OF SAN ANTONIO CALLS FOR
APPLICATIONS FOR 2009 GRANTS

San Antonio, TX September 1, 2009 The Artist Foundation of San Antonio announced today that the application period for 2009 grants will begin on September 1 and close on October 16, 2009.

San Antonio artists should go to the Foundation's website for information and to apply www.artistfound.org. This year, up to eleven (11) $5,000 awards will be made in the categories of Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Literary Arts, Media Arts, Classical Singing, Theatrical Set Design and Theatrical Costume Design. San Antonio artists may apply online from September 1 through October 16. Please visit www.artistfound.org or write to info@artistfound.org for more information. Awards will be announced in mid November.

Now in its fourth year of operation, the Foundation, created by co-founders Patricia Pratchett and Bettie Ward, is becoming an established source for grants to individual artists and a presence in the local arts community. The purpose of the Foundation is to identify, recognize and award outstanding San Antonio artists across various artistic disciplines. With this round of awards the AF will have awarded nearly $275,000 to over 50 artists. The Foundation is the only organization in our area that distinguishes itself with the sole objective of making monetary awards to individual artists. The Foundation hopes to raise awareness about the vast artistic talent in our community and in turn grow and diversify the art market throughout Bexar County. Artists, as small business owners, are important to local economic development. Please visit www.artistfound.org for more information about the Foundation and for a full list of artist who have received awards over the past three years.

The Artist Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The Foundation is supported in part by The Cultural Collaborative of the City of San Antonio, The Tobin Endowment, The Tobin Theatre Arts Fund, the estate of George Cortes, Lifshutz Foundation and The Liberto Family.

Jackie Mendez Update

Jackie Mendez Update:

Hello friends and family,

Just wanted to give you an update on a recent article that was posted on HangProud, an organization based out of New York City that is dedicated to empowering young girls and women. As some of you know, I am one of their featured writers for their blog site. Recently, an article I wrote made their front page, and will be there for the month of Sept- October. You can go to the article from the Proud Women home page, it will be on the right-side column of the Day in the Life subheading: http://www.hangproud.com/Home/ProudWomen
or directly to this address: http://www.hangproud.com/page/1368.

I want to give a special thanks to my Krav Maga instructor, Leslie Martinez. It is an honor to know you and was a priviledge to interview you. You are an awesome inspiration to the people you help.
Love and blessings,
Jacqueline Mendez, Author of Heart of the Jaguar
