James Munoz--Aug. 5--Barnes & Noble, Ingram

James Munoz
KENS-5 TV
From Josie Mixon:
Good Day Everyone,

Hope everyone is having a wonderful summer. Please join us on August 5th for a wonderful night of poetry. Tom E will host the poetry workshop (Barnes and Noble--Ingram) beginning at 6:00pm with open mic following at 7:00pm and our featured guest James Munoz, will present at 8:00pm. Please read below for the exciting information regarding our featured guest. I look forward to seeing everyone there and look forward to listening to your beautiful, inspiring voices. Love you, see you then....

Josie
Born in Midland, Texas, James Muñoz graduated from Texas Tech University with a BA in Broadcast Journalism in 1997. In 1998, James landed his first job as a news reporter at KVII-TV in Amarillo. A year later, he went to work in the Coastal Bend. While in Corpus Christi, Muñoz covered Hurricane Bret and was on the scene during the hostage standoff involving now-retired Archbishop Patrick Flores in San Antonio.

A real coup for James came when he conducted an interview with CBS news legend Walter Cronkite when Cronkite visited Corpus Christi in 2000. James then headed to East Texas, where he served as weekend anchor for KTRE-TV in Lufkin. The stars led him back across the state the following year, where he signed as news director and anchor for the 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts for the NBC affiliate in San Angelo.

In 2003, James began reporting for KENS 5 Eyewitness News. Since then he has covered numerous key stories for KENS 5. He spent 10 days in Louisiana reporting on the devastation from Hurricane Katrina. James also provided coverage of Hurricane Ike and the Pasta de Conchos mine explosion in Mexico.

With ties that bind him across the Lone Star state, from the Texas panhandle to the Rio Grande, James Muñoz is a true son of Texas.

Omni Books Author Tips

From Omni Books:

Author Tip #12:
Using Ezines to promote your book

A key success factor for authors, especially non-fiction authors, is establishing their credibility. Having articles published in magazines is a great way to establish your credibility, but often getting in the mainstream publications on a regular basis is difficult. In this new age we live in, authors can now take control of their article publication by using ezines. There are countless ezines in existence, each with a specific niche or category. And all of them are voraciously hungry for content.

Rather than seeking them out individually, you can place your articles into databases that ezine editors frequent for content. They use your article free of charge, and in exchange, include your biographical byline, which includes information about you and your book.
Here are some to check out:
http://www.ezinearticles.com
http://www.connectionteam.com
http://www.ideamarketers.com
http://www.goarticles.com
http://www.knowledge-finder.com
http://www.articlecity.com

A good strategy is to start your blog first and have the articles link to your blog. If you've already written your book, you can write articles related to your book or even "chop" up sections and create articles. If you haven't finished your book, you can use articles as "teasers" and your articles will help drive more traffic to your blog creating more potential buyers when your book is finished.

As a final note, keep in mind the importance of the traditional magazines as well. In fact, as you write for the ezines on a regular basis, you will begin to find your voice and your message. Keep submitting your articles to offline magazines as well as the credibility these publications offer is still very powerful.

Here's looking at you!

Poetry Reading at The Twig--Today

From Bryce Milligan:

Hello all,

Among the considerable number of submissions received here at Wings (just shy of 3,000 in the last 12 months), I occasionally discover an unusually young poet whose work should be celebrated. When it turns out that such a young voice is local, I do what I can. Annie Parker submitted her manuscript, "Remembrance of Rain," to Wings Press's Whitebird chapbook contest last year. Of the hundred or so submissions to this contest received from poets all over the country -- professionals and amateurs, carpenters and academics -- "Remembrance of Rain" turned up in the top ten. That's when we read the names and discovered that Annie was a 17-year-old Senior at TMI here in San Antonio. She is heading to Rice University in the Fall.

Some people criticize early publication -- outside of "student" magazines and anthologies -- as potentially damaging to the creative development of the poet. Bull. Shelley published a Gothic novel, Zastrozzi, in 1810 at the age of 18. Emerson's first published essay appeared in 1822 when he was but 19. John Keats' first published poem appeared in 1816 in Leigh Hunt's The Examiner, when the poet was only 20. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of similar examples. Early publication is simply evidence of talent and will power. This editor is certainly not making any guarantees of literary immortality, but in Remembrance of Rain, this young poet exemplifies a sense of grace and place, of sound and image, and a rather delightful intellect.

Do join us at the Twig for a short reading and signing by Annie Parker. Tuesday, July 21, from 5 to 7 p.m.

From Lupe Gonzalez:

The SOCIETY OF LATINO AND HISPANIC WRITERS OF SAN ANTONIO celebrated its 5th Anniversary on July 13 at Barnes & Noble, San Pedro Crossing. Our founder, Ruben Soto, could not be present. However, he sent a letter filled with congratulations to the group as a whole, and gratitude, especially to the founding members – Vincent Bosquez and Lupe Gonzalez.

Our special guest was Diana Lopez, who introduced her newest book, CONFETTI GIRL, a coming of age story in the Young Adult genre. The author read from her book and answered questions.

Some of the “words of wisdom” she shared:

“Writing is discovery.”
This was in answer to the question of whether or not she planned out her stories.

Lopez started writing in a journal in 1980, “my complaints”, she said with a smile. She stopped journaling until 1985. This time she wrote “comebacks”. You know, those wonderful words that you’d have said to someone, but they come to you two hours later? Soon after this, she began to turn the little things in life into stories. She encouraged everyone, specifically aspiring writers, to journal.

The Society is now a non-profit organization and we foresee many good things to come. Please join us on the second Monday of every month at 7:30 p.m., at the Barnes and Noble, San Pedro Crossing. Our meetings are free and open to the public.

Diana Lopez at Barnes and Noble, San Pedro Crossing

The article below appeared in Conexion, published by the San Antonio Express-News.
Diana Lopez will celebrate the 5th Anniversary of the Society of Latino and Hispanic Writers of San Antonio by appearing as our guest author, Monday, July 13 at the Barnes and Noble, San Pedro Crossing, at 7:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

Dichos, real life and death
Elaine Ayala- Conexión

Diana López's new book “Confetti Girl” is for young readers but deals with the heavy topic of the death of a parent and the retreat of another.

Luckily, Lina Flores, a middle-schooler in Corpus Christi, is an optimist. It helps that her best friend lives across the street with a mom obsessed with cascarones and the Lifetime Channel. Lina loves science and sports and has her first crush.

During the semester in which “Confetti Girl” (Little, Brown & Co., $15.99) unfolds, Lina finds comfort in dichos, a tool that helped López organize the book and her character cope. A dicho opens each chapter. Among them, “Cada cabeza es un mundo,” or “Inside each head lies a different world.”

This is a second novel for López, who teaches English at St. Philip's College. In 2002, she published “Sofia's Saints,” about a Latina who lost her mother years before and is now facing another loss.

The new book has been out for a few weeks but already has positive reviews from Publishers Weekly and Booklist.

Unlike migrant, coming-of-age stories that readers of Latino fiction may be familiar with, López's story draws on her heritage but is a universal story.

“The story is about a girl who's Mexican American,” she says. It's “not about a conflict with her culture.”

Though both of López's parents are alive and well, the idea of loss offers lots of material. “What greater loss is there when you're still trying to figure out the world,” she says.

Cascarones are a major metaphor in the book. “We're fragile just like eggshells. We try so hard not to break, but maybe we should,” she says of the confetti-filled shells.

López will sign copies of her book at 7 p.m. Monday, July 13, at the Barnes & Nobles at San Pedro Crossing, 321 San Pedro Ave.

When My Dad Comes Home

Last week I had the opportunity to meet Lupina Vela, author of When My Dad Comes Home, released by Pedestal Publishing, Inc.

The book has also been published in Spanish, Cuando Regrese Mi Papa.

As a 23-year Marine Corps veteran, I took great interest in this book, especially since the author based it on a real boy who was reunited with his father, a staff sergeant in the Marine Corps.

I read the book and it really hit home. I strongly encourage everyone, regardless of which branch of military service is your favorite, to purchase a copy of the book so that children can see what other children go through when their military father or mother is stationed unaccompanied overseas, or assigned to serve in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Go to www.pedestalpublishing.com to purchase the book, in English, Spanish, or both! The book is $16.95 (plus sales tax) and there is a $2.95 shipping and handling charge.

I trust you will enjoy the book as much as I did.

Celebrate our Anniversary and Meet Diana Lopez

It gives me great pleasure to invite you to the 5th Anniversary Celebration of the founding of the Society of Latino and Hispanic Writers of San Antonio, at Barnes and Noble, San Pedro Crossing, on Monday, July 13 at 7:30 p.m. Our guest speaker will be an author who has been with us since the beginning--Diana Lopez!

Diana recently had her book, Confetti Girl, published by Little, Brown and Company. From the website:

Apolonia "Lina" Flores is a sock enthusiast, a volleyball player, a science lover, and a girl who's just looking for answers. Even though her house is crammed full of books (her dad's a bibliophile), she's having trouble figuring out some very big questions, like why her dad seems to care about books more than her, why her best friend's divorced mom is obsessed with making cascarones (hollowed eggshells filled with colorful confetti), and, most of all, why her mom died last year. Like colors in a cascarone, Lina's life is a rainbow of people, interests, and unexpected changes.
In her first novel for young readers, Diana López creates a clever and honest story about a young Latina girl navigating growing pains in her South Texan city.

Please make every effort to attend this wonderful celebration of a Society and an author whose literary star is rising fast! I believe the San Antonio Express-News will have a feature article on Diana and her book in this Sunday's newspaper--look for it and then come out and meet the author in person!

We will have cake and coffee, and Diana will be signing books after her presentation.

Thank you and keep writing,
Vince

Bird, Brandon and Flynn at La Cantera--Wednesday
