Bihl Haus Arts

Dear Friends of Bihl Haus Arts,

On Saturday, Aug. 28th at 2 pm at Bihl Haus Arts, DAVID S. RUBIN, The Brown Foundation Curator of Contemporary Art at SAMA, will do one of the things that he does best: he'll talk about art! This time with sculptor RAUL CASTELLANOS, whose work--more than 30 assemblage sculptures plus an installation--is on display in the gallery. This is a great opportunity not only to see Raul's show, "Recovery and Recycling," but it is also an opportune moment to learn about it from the inside out, from the artist himself and from the expert on contemporary art in San Antonio.

More. . .

In this dialog, deaf artist Raul Castellanos will explore themes of Recovery—his own from addiction and mental health recovery, the recovery of an ecosystem after the BP oil spill (the subject of his new installation at Bihl Haus), and the perpetual consumption of our society,—and Recycling—of found objects salvaged from trash heaps and gobs of dried paint peeled from the palettes of artist friends and harvested from his ‘Paint Farm’ where he collects recycled paint.

Raul will be speaking with David S. Rubin, an active figure in the contemporary arts field for over thirty years. In September 2006, San Antonio was very fortunate that David assumed the position of The Brown Foundation Curator of Contemporary Art at the San Antonio Museum of Art. He brought to San Antonio his endless fascination with the contemporary art scene and a deep respect for our area artists. Under his tenure at SAMA, he has overseen the brilliant reorganization of the Contemporary collection that now includes major works by some of San Antonio's most important established and emerging artists. Over the years, David has organized numerous solo and thematic exhibitions. His most recent blockbuster exhibition is Psychedelic: Optical and Visionary Art since the 1960s, which is accompanied by a comprehensive best-selling book (co-published by SAMA and MIT Press) on the subject.

So, join us for what we believe will be an absorbing afternoon of art and conversation accompanied, of course, by libations and a little nibble.

See you on Saturday!
Kellen

P.S. Get your Gold on! Raul Castellanos will share his knowledge of gold-leafing techniques in a workshop on Saturday, September 11th at 2 p.m. Attendees are asked to bring any interesting found object, no larger than a fist or book, to gold leaf. Materials fee is $15.00 per person. For reservations, please call 210-383-9723.

P.S.S. As always, please feel free to forward this mail to friends and family, and to print and post the attached invitation in conspicuous places!

Meet Aztlan Libre Press

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AZTLAN LIBRE PRESS PUBLISHES ALURISTA’S TUNALUNA

Aztlan Libre Press, a new, independent publishing company based out of San Antonio, Texas that is dedicated to the promotion, publication, and free expression of Xican@ Literature and Art, announces the publication of its first book, Tunaluna, by the renowned veterano Chicano poet, alurista. This is alurista’s first publication in ten years.

alurista is one of the seminal and most influential voices in the history of Chicano Literature. A pioneering poet of the Chicano Movement in the late 60s and 70s, he broke down barriers in the publishing world with his use of bilingual and multilingual writings in Spanish, English, Nahuatl and Maya. A scholar, activist, editor, organizer and philosopher, he holds a Ph.D in Spanish and Latin American Literature from the University of California in San Diego and is the author of ten books including Floricanto en Aztlán (1971), Timespace Huracán (1976), Spik in Glyph? (1981) and Z Eros (1995). His book, Et Tú Raza?, won the Before Columbus Foundation National Book Award in Poetry in 1996. Author of “El Plan Espiritual de Aztlán,” he is a key figure in the reclaiming of the MeXicano cultural identity, history and heritage through his integration of American Indian language, symbols and spirituality in his writings.

Tunaluna is classic alurista: passionate, sensuous, and political. alurista’s tenth book of poetry is a collection of 52 poems that takes us on a time trip through the first decade of the 21st century where he bears witness to the “Dubya” wars, terrorism, oil and $4 gallons of gas, slavery, and ultimately spiritual transformation and salvation. The “Word Wizard of Aztlan” is at his razor-sharp best, playing with his palabras as well as with our senses and sensibilities. alurista is a Xicano poet for the ages and a chronicler of la Nueva Raza Cózmica. With Tunaluna he trumpets the return of Quetzalcoatl, the feathered-serpent of Aztec and Mayan prophecy, and helps to lead us out of war and into the dawn of a new consciousness and sun, el Sexto Sol, nahuicoatl, cuatro serpiente, the sun of justice.

“alurista experiments on the edge, thickly layers multiple meanings onto each cryptic line through language play, brilliant code-switching (‘tu mellow dia’) and love songs to la raza. A statement of survival, he confronts the politics and the hypocrisy of ‘the estados undidos de angloamérica’ with an irrepressible rhythm, with the ‘slingshots in our hands’ of pre-Columbian truths, and with the ability to craft real words from our unreal world of avarice and oppression. alurista’s tenth book holds many spirit treasures calling out to us from between the lines. Con razón k he hears the haunting spirits beneath the surface—‘ayer pasé x tu casa/y me ladra/ron/los libros.’”
(Carmen Tafolla, Ph.D., Doctor of Philosophy, poet and Visiting Faculty, University of Texas at San Antonio)

“Tunaluna is a work of hope, humor, outrage, and beauty by one of our most notable Chicano bards. alurista reminds his readers of the political possibilities of the poetic; in his poems, we hear the song of a people.”
(Cristina Beltrán, Associate Professor of Political Science at Haverford College and author of The Trouble with Unity: Latino Politics and the Creation of Identity)

ISBN-13: 978-0-9844415-0-1 * $15.00 * 76 pages * Trade Paperback * Publication: October 2010

This is from an email I received from Janie Alonso:

Gracias comadre Edna Campos Gravenhorst for this post!

What: StoryCorps Historias to visit San Antonio

Where: Las Palmas Branch Library • 515 Castroville Road • 434-6394
When: Sunday-Tuesday, August 15-17
Please call branch library for hours, or visit
http://www.mysapl.org/locations.aspx

Everyone has a story to tell, and StoryCorps Historias wants to hear from San
Antonio Hispanics. StoryCorps will be in San Antonio on August 15, 16, and 17,
at the Las Palmas Branch Library, 515 Castroville Road. All it takes is you and
a friend or family member to have a conversation about your experiences, your
memories, your thoughts, or your plans.

StoryCorps Historias is an initiative to record the diverse stories and life
experiences of Latinos in the United States. This is an opportunity to record
those stories your grandmother always tells you, share what you remember about
your mother, honor the uncle who served in the armed forces, or tell why you are
in San Antonio - anything meaningful to you and your community. Sharing these
stories celebrates our history, honors our heritage, and captures the true
spirit of our community. It will ensure that the voices of Latinos will be
preserved and remembered for generations to come.

When you record your story, you’ll have a meaningful experience captured on CD
to share with your friends, family, and community. With your permission, a copy
will be archived at the Library of Congress for future generations to hear.
Individuals (the interviewer and the interviewee) are invited to make a
reservation to record their stories by contacting Rebecca Alvarez at Las Palmas,

Recovery & Recycling

RAUL CASTELLANOS
“Recovery & Recycling”
Opening Reception: Fri., Aug. 13th, 5:30-8:30 pm
LIVE art performance @ 7 pm

Dear Friends of Bihl Haus Arts,

Lux surfaces and bling-bling with meaning await you at the opening reception for Recovery & Recycling at Bihl Haus Arts on Friday, August 13th, 5:30 to 8:30 pm. The reception features a signature live art performance at 7 pm by deaf artist RAUL CASTELLANOS.

In works like “Cyber Sexuality,” Raul rips out, reconfigures, and then sutures together the entrails of computers, cell phones, and other modern ‘conveniences’ to which we have become addicted. He unifies these varied surfaces with metallics (the bling-bling)—gold, silver, and copper spray paints, metal leafing, foils, shiny confection wrappers—, which form glossy crusts that transmute re-formed discarded articles into objects of luxury.

"In his gold and silver assemblage sculptures," writes David S. Rubin, The Brown Foundation Curator of Contemporary Art at the San Antonio Museum of Art, "Raul transforms everyday found materials into objects of beauty, with overtones of divinity. In this respect, his art exemplifies the Beat poet Allen Ginsberg’s dictum that 'Everything is holy!'”

More . . .

In this exhibit, Raul explores themes of Recovery—his own from addiction and mental health recovery, the recovery of an ecosystem after the BP oil spill and other environmental disasters, and the perpetual consumption of our society,—and Recycling—of found objects salvaged from trash heaps (“Storytime Series”) and gobs of dried paint peeled from the palettes of artist friends and harvested from his ‘Paint Farm’ where he collects recycled paint (“Energy of 1,001 Artists Series”).

“The objects I recover,” Raul asserts, “have a story to tell that I mesh together to tell another story,” often with a poetic conceit—the sculptor is also an accomplished poet. The creative process is for Raul a true therapeutic and spiritual ritual: the recycled object assemblages are a sublimation of repressed feelings that can lead to troubles, troubles from which he personally—and society as a whole—need recover in order to survive, to thrive.

The 28-year old artist, born in Mexico City, was raised in Miami, Buenos Aires, and San Antonio, where he currently resides. Raul regularly exhibits at venues throughout San Antonio and has shown work in Argentina. He is also an arts teacher and an arts administrator, most recently at Bent Easel Gallery where he served as Curator and at San Antonio Visual Artist Gallery as Gallery Director. A native Spanish speaker, Raul is also fluent in English and American Sign Language. True to his dedication to the environment and to social justice issues, Raul will donate 20% from the sale of the artworks in this exhibit to National Wildlife Federation in support of relief efforts for wildlife victims of the BP Oil Spill .

Also, please mark your calendar for additional related programming:

· Sat., Aug. 28th, 2 pm: David S. Rubin will discuss the artist’s work and more in a tête-à-tête with Raul Castellanos at a Bihl Haus Dialog

· Sat., Sept. 11th, 2 pm: Join Raul in a gold-leafing workshop. Please bring an interesting found object, no larger than a fist or book, to gold leaf. Materials fee: $15.00 per person. Reservations: 210-383-9723.

To see Raul’s Facebook portfolio, please go to: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2028557&id=1247484205#!/album.php?aid=2028557&id=1247484205

Aurora by Rafael Castillo

Here's a book by a colleague of mine at Palo Alto College:

Floricanto Press
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Aurora By Rafael Castillo ISBN:978-1888205-30-5

Rafael Castillo's characters are a Chicano variation of Edward Hopper's "Nighthawks," sleepless souls lost in their own thoughts," Jacinto Jesus Cardona, author of Pan Dulce: Poems These eleven tightly-packed short stories, often allegorical yet visceral, range from the phantasmagorical "Aurora", whose misdeed has condemned her to a cyclical river of Eternal Return, to the agnostic Tomas and faithful Pedro in the theological "Penitent of Guadalupe Street", where truth is an enigma wrapped in a metaphor. In another story, a bellicose dwarf is murdered and the story is told from shifting points of view. In "Dwarfs and Penitents," an angry jilted husband searches the cobblestone streets of Prague in search of vengeance, while in "The Sands of Dhahran," a middle-age soldier battles his demons during Operation Desert Storm. In these luminous stories, Castillo give us penitents, dwarfs, lost youth, WWII vets, pachucos, doppelgangers, and memorable others populating the American literary landscape. ___ Rafael Castillo teaches writing and literature at Palo Alto College in San Antonio, Texas. He is the author of Distant Journeys, and his writing has appeared in The Arizona Quarterly, College English, Imagine, English Journal, Frank, New Mexico Humanities Review, Puentes, Southwestern American Literature, Saguaro, and ViAztlán. His fiction has also been widely syndicated and anthologized in Under the Pomegranate Tree (Washington Square Press), Lone Star Literature (W.W.Norton), Hispanic Link, (Washington, DC) and New Growth (Corona Press). "Castillo has a poet's feel for language and a gritty sense of urban reality. Aurora and other stories is a welcome addition to the growing body of Mexican American literature," Don Graham is the J. Frank Dobie Regents Professor of American Literature and English at UT-Austin, and a writer-at-large for Texas Monthly.

"Complicated, interesting, and enthralling, Castillo has one of the most authentic voices coming out of Aztlan. Our inheritance is in his words." Sheila Sanchez-Hatch, author of Strong Box Heart
"A personal memory of profound intimacy and delicately layered...Castillo's book is enticing and energizing." Carmen Tafolla,
