What are you reading?

Every week we ask our members "What are you reading?". Here is one response:

Reading is something that happens in a variety of ways, from newspapers and magazines in paper and online, to books. Impossible to say what I am reading. In any case I recommend always reading Harper´s magazine for a rich variety of material, including a short story in each issue.

...I recommend...Don Juan Tenorio, a romantic play with a lot to offer in matter of literary devices and thematic complexity. The popular figure of Don Juan is much more complex and meaningful that what we tend to make of the common expression.

Poetry Book Party

FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC
by
H. Palmer Hall

Poetry Book Party
hosted by St. Mary's University
English Department

emceed by Marian Haddad

at

The Louis J. Blume Academic Library on
the St. Mary's University Campus

Thursday, March 4, 2010

4:30-6:00 p.m.
"Out of the wreckage of America's failed war in Vietnam, Palmer Hall has fashioned poems of quiet beauty and supple strength. There are no pretensions here, no posturing, but only the hard-earned wisdom of a gentle heart and a bedrock decency making it possible to believe that, in spite of everything, we still have reason to hope."
—W. D. Ehrhart

"I can't say it better than a Vietnam combat vet responding to one of Palmer Hall's poems on the Internet: 'Outstanding! Just outstanding!'"
—Jonathan Shay

"Palmer Hall's voice is as forthright and intimate as a first love affair or a last, lingering grief. His book's subject is the impact of Viet Nam on an American life, and his hope is that he can translate that jungle of painful images for the rest of us who were not there. There is nothing false or affected in these pages--only the undistorted news of the heart. From the Periphery is that haunting, that luminous."

SLHW Meeting Monday

I just wanted to remind you that on Monday night, we have Houston author Gwendolyn Zepeda traveling to San Antonio just to speak to the members of the Society of Latino and Hispanc Writers! Gwendolyn's presentation will be Monday night, Feb. 8, at 7:30 p.m., at Barnes and Noble, San Pedro Crossing.

Gwendolyn has just published her second book, Lone Star Legend, with Grand Central Publishing, a division of Hachette Book Group USA (formerly Time Warner Books).

Publisher's Description:
When Sandy Saavedra lands her dream job with the popular website ¡Latino Now!, she can't wait to write hard-hitting pieces to combat all those stupid Latino stereotypes. While visions of Pulitzers dance in her head, her editor in chief is suddenly laid off, replaced by the infamous Dolores Villanueva O'Sullivan. Dolores has one mission: make ¡Latino Now! an internet phenomenon, no matter how many pandering puff pieces she has to pack onto its pages. Sandy doesn't see how she can keep this job without losing her soul, especially when she's sent to Middle-of-Nowhere Texas to investigate the dumbest legend her people ever created, the Chupacabra. She fears she's about to fail an assignment-and lose her job-until she meets Tío Jaime, a grandfatherly hermit who might be crazy, or might be the best thing that ever happened to Sandy's career.

I hope you have the opportunity to join us in welcoming Gwenolyn to San Antonio for this special talk just for you!

Las Voces de San Antonio! (The Voices of San Antonio)
Wed., Feb 3, 2010 at 7 p.m.

Ruth Taylor Theater Building
Free and open to the public

…a moving mosaic of San Antonio voices, rich with the language and the values of the bicultural West-Side, this fascinating performance ranges from the six-year-old to the elderly veteran, and from the tough chola dropout to the courageous college student. Experience a truly bilingual, transcultural tour through San Antonio’s barrios, and leave with an inspiring sense of how valuable each of us are, through our individual and our cultural diversity. Dr. Dorey Schmidt says of Tafolla’s performance, “You will laugh and cry, and celebrateyour own uniqueness.”

Dr. Carmen Tafolla has performed this one-woman show at Cornell, Ohio State, Universidad de Malaga, The National Museum of New Zealand, UNAM in Mexico City, and throughout Europe and the Americas.

One of the most anthologized of Latina writers, Tafolla is the author of more than fifteen books, including her latest collection of short stories, The Holy Tortilla and a Pot of Beans, which won the 2009 Tomas Rivera Book Award. She has also received the 1999 Art of Peace Award, recognition by the National Association for Chicano Studies for work which "gives voice to the peoples and cultures of this land," and was called by Roots author Alex Haley, "a world-class writer."
