Awaken the Sleeping Poet

Awaken the Sleeping Poet, Barnes & Noble This Thursday Night! March 31st Margaret Mayberry and Karen Schneider. Margaret and Karen are excellent poets who read their poetry very well. I expect both pathos and humor, poignancy and frivolity from these two fine poets. Also, they are two of the most gracious, modest, and sincere ladies I have the pleasure of knowing. If you know them, you know what I'm talking about. If you don't know them, come out and meet them and you'll quickly learn how charming they are, and that my words do not do them justice. Bring yourself! Bring a friend! Bring a poem! See you Thursday night! So put March 31 at 7 p.m. in your brains. It will be another great night of poetry at Awaken the Sleeping Poet, Barnes and Noble. Regards, Your Host: Floyd (Michaud) L. Lamrouex lamrouex@sbcglobal.net

The Lost Border: Essays on how life and culture have been changed by the violence along the U.S.-Mexico border

This new anthology will focus on the unique life and culture along the U.S.-Mexico border that has been changed and even lost because of the recent drug violence. This book will feature writers from both sides of the border who explore the culture that has been changed or lost, the lives that have been split in two, and the way of life that has been interrupted, or even eradicated, by the violence along the border.

Some of the questions that might be explored are: What way of life has been lost due to the recent violence? What are the ramifications of this change for culture, politics, families, institutions, the arts, and even individual psyches? Will it be possible to regain what has been truncated? What might the border’s future be? Are there any positive side-effects?

We hope that writers will conjure the past in telling moments and reflect on the forces that have spun out of control to destroy the unique bi-national, bicultural existence of la frontera. Location is a vitally important and intrinsic element of the essays we seek, and each essay should show substantial ties to the border through the essayist’s lived experience. We anticipate that the writing will draw scholars as well as those in the general public who wish to thoughtfully negotiate the border’s current complexities.

The publisher of this project will be Arte Público Press and the anticipated publication date is in 2012.

Please read the submission guidelines and follow them. We look forward to reading your submission. We will contact you by email about acceptance or rejection of your essay.

Sarah Cortez (Cortez.Sarah@gmail.com) and Sergio Troncoso (SergioTroncoso@gmail.com)

Editors

Submission Guidelines:

The deadline is August 1, 2011 postmark, without exceptions. The length of the essay should be 3,000 to 6,000 words; please title your essay. The essay should be unpublished and written in English. All contributors shall be Latino/a.

Each essay should be typed in Times Roman 12-point type with standard manuscript formatting for margins and spacing.

Include your name, snail-mail address, two contact phone numbers, two email addresses, and exact word count in the top left margin of the first page of your manuscript.

We do not accept electronic submissions. Mail two hard copies of the essay and your bio to Sergio
Troncoso, 2373 Broadway, Suite 1808 , New York , NY 10024 . No submission will be returned; please keep a copy for your records.

Please include a one-paragraph biography summarizing your publishing credits. Include a sentence or two that defines your relationship with the border (e.g. cities or towns lived in, length of residence/familiarity).

If your essay is accepted, we will need an electronic file as a Word document. We will contact you about suggested revisions.

Hello everyone,

The purpose of this email is to enlist your support in promoting an anti-bullying/allies training targeting high school youth. Specifically, we are asking you to announce, forward, post to Facebook the invitation below (also attached as a jpg image) so that we can reach as many San Antonio area high school aged youth as possible. This training is also available to those who work with youth.

What: Anti-Bullying/Allies SafeZone Training, an event of Our Lady of the Lake University's Gay-Straight Alliance and Worden School of Social Service Social Work Students

When: Saturday, April 2, 2011, 9:00a-4:00p

Where: Our Lady of the Lake University's Sueltenfuss Library Community Room

Cost: FREE with pre-registration includes free breakfast, lunch, manual, parking; sign up/register by Thursday, March 31, 2011

To Register/For Questions: Email Alliance@ollusa.edu or call 434-6711, ext. 2502

A message from Jennifer Iruegas, President of OLLU's Gay Straight Alliance: My classmates and I are reaching out to you to support our effort to help stop the rising epidemic of bullying, specifically bullying that targets youth who are or are perceived to be lesbian, gay, transgender, or bisexual. This opportunity to act as an active ally and advocate comes to you at a time of increased importance. The Safe Zone Training is organized by social work majors who have witnessed the strong need for the community and employees of the school districts to assist in the fight against bullycide, bullying, and hate crimes geared toward the LGBTQ population. Gay and lesbian youth deserve our support as they often struggle in isolation. This event will provide a chance for gay youth and their allies to come together in mutual support.

We really appreciate your time in taking these few minutes to read over this message and consider your option to help students break their silence.

From Bihl Haus Arts

From Bihl Haus Arts:

Dear Friends of Bihl Haus Arts,

And now for something totally different! Please click on
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8FmTKFkEhg
to receive an extraordinary video invitation to our next event at Bihl Haus Arts, then let me know what you think!

Bihl Haus v. The Alamo

“I was born here,” a multi-media tableau, THURSDAY, MARCH 24, 6-9 pm

For the fifth year in a row, Bihl Haus Arts, built from Alamo stone, takes on The Alamo through the arts. In a multi-media tableau, titled “I Was Born Here. Roses are yellow and the Alamo is a blood-tree” produced by Bihl Haus Arts, creator Virginia Grise (2010 Yale Drama Award recipient) re-imagines “Remember El Alma,” Bihl Haus Arts’ crucially acclaimed 2010 Luminaria performance.

The original poem by Barbara Renaud Gonzalez, also titled “Remember El Alma,” forms the cornerstone of “I Was Born Here,” a recurring poignant line in the poem that has been reinterpreted in multiple forms for this event. In a new film, edited by Mirasol Riojas, currently a PhD candidate in film at UCLA, with camerawork by award-winning cinematographer Pocha Pena and art direction by Virginia Grise, 6-year-old Inez Barrera charmingly interprets the poem from a child’s point of view In the live performance at Bihl Haus on March 24th, an ensemble cast--Marisela Barrera, Monique Cortez, Natalie Goodnow, and Olupero Aiyenimelo—will re-stage the poem to haunting melodies composed and performed live by Rachel Cruz, PhD.

This live production will be set amid a new site-specific installation by Deborah Kuetzpalin Vasquez that features four large-scale painted tapestries depicting goddesses who symbolize the cardinal directions, with which Bihl Haus Arts aligns perfectly. Fresh flowers and fronds will transform the gallery space into a dreamlike world situated beneath a canopy of shimmering metallic-toned branches and boughs.

This all-female production, an official CAM event, also celebrates Women’s History Month. Please arrive at Bihl Haus by 7 pm to enjoy the full performance. A suggested donation of $5 at the door would be greatly appreciated.

Remember the Bihl Haus!

Kellen

P.S. This production was made possible in part with generous support from Dr. Raphael Guerra and Sandra Castro Guerra, the Texas Commission on the Arts through the San Antonio Office of Cultural Affairs, the Potashnik Family Foundation, and Primrose at Monticello Park Senior Apartments.

P.S.S. Please feel free to forward this email to anyone who might be interested and to print and post the attached invitation in conspicuous places!

Diane Gonzales Bertrand

Diana Gonzales Bertrand will be speaking to the Society on Monday, March 14 with a writing workshop titled “Backbones to Building a Novel" at the regularly monthly meeting at Barnes & Noble at 7:30 pm. She will talk about how she developed her novels, and also include a couple of writing exercises for the audience to create stronger foundations for their own novel writing.
Copies of some of her novels will be available for sale at the meeting. During the talk, she will reference three books: The Ruiz Street Kids/Los Muchachos de la Calle Ruiz, Trino's Choice and her new book, The F Factor.

Sagebrush Review Update

From the Sagebrush Review:

Greetings all,

Apologies for not getting this notice out sooner. It has been a wild and revealing - or wildly revealing - past few weeks, but we at the Review are pressing onward. Many of you have been asking about the March open mic which, according to our previous month-to-month schedule, should be pinned for this Friday the 11th. We are now considering new venues for the Sagebrush events to more thoroughly explore what this brilliant city has to offer in the way of open mic-friendly establishments. We may have to push back this week's reading to after spring break, unless someone can contact one of us at the Review in the next few days with a viable option for a venue this Friday.

Beyond the urgency of locating a venue for this week, you are all invited and encouraged (if so compelled) to join us in the search for alternative venues in San Antonio to be considered for future Sagebrush events. The Review and its audiences/supporters have enjoyed a long and productive relationship with Candlelight Coffeehouse & Bar, and we are ever grateful for their resources and warmth, however it is time to chart a new path. Please contact anyone associated with the Review with suggestions for new venues for these open mics, which I'm pleased to declare have been rapidly growing in intensity and attendance over the course of the past few months.

In another area, we are approaching the conclusion of our submission-selection process for volume 6 and should have confirmation of the chosen pieces by the end of the week. Despite the chaos this year's regime has suffered, we do promise to have a completed volume for 2010-2011 that humbly yet confidently steps beyond its predecessors in terms of quality and content. Oh yes, be excited.

One final note:
David Hale (Assistant Editor) and I will be reading tonight (March 9th) on behalf of the Sagebrush Review at the Hilton Palacio del Rio on S. Alamo St. in honor of National Poetry Month. The evening promises to be prolific and comfortable and boasts the presence of many dynamic authors. I'll include some details at the end of the message. If you could use a night off from school/work/responsibilities (like I could) and wish to venture downtown for a night of wonders, come say hello to us at the Hilton Palacio del Rio and enjoy some live poetry. Event starts at 7 PM.

His father was a construction superintendent and the family moved often. Harold Warford

Harold Warford is a retired attorney who is one of the funniest poets you'll ever meet. His stories about his clients and his law practice will have you rolling in the aisles with laughter. Call him crusty, or salty, or dry wit, but he is hilarious. It's a true treat to have Harold as a featured reader next Tuesday.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Steve and Harold will begin at 7:00 p.m.
Then it's open mic from 8:00 to 8:50
Then our poets will read an encore poem from 8:50 to 9:00
