Bihl Haus Event

From Bihl Haus--Please save the date:

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 8, 6-9 PM
for
"Pintame una Flor y te cuento una Love Story/
Paint Me a Flower and I'll Tell You a Love Story"

Dear Friends of Bihl Haus Arts,

When writer Barbara Renaud Gonzalez and visual artist Terry Ybanez mentioned that the last 50 cloth-bound library copies of Barbara’s novel, Golondrina, why did you leave me?, were available, we immediately saw the opportunity for a ‘novel’ fundraiser that united the literary and visual arts of San Antonio--at Bihl Haus Arts we firmly believe in the illuminating power of art and stories.

David Zamora Casas said "YES!!" And so did 49 other San Antonio artists, including Raul Caste llanos, Joan Frederick, Albert Alvarez, Danville Chadbourne, Jimena Marin, Russell Stephenson, and Wesley Harvey, when we invited them to join us in this 'novel' Bihl Ha us Arts collaborative project. Each artist will embellish with their unique artistic vision and offer for silent auction the cloth-covered edition of Barbara’s book—the first Chicana novel to be published by the University of Texas Press (April 2009).

The evening, titled "Pintame una Flor y te cuento una Love Story," includes a Reading, Silent Auction, & Art Pachanga at Bihl Haus Arts on FRIDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2010. Cocktails begin at 6:00 pm followed by the first-of-its-kind-ever Silent Auction of artist-embellished books from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. The evening includes antojitos, música y mas.

Much mas! Barbara will read--and oooooh what a performance she gives!--from her passionate novel to the rhythms of jazz percussionist Joaquin Abrego. Actors will also recreate excerpts from the book, climaxing in the scintillating salsa-rhumba-tango-flamenco dance scene. The evening culminates with poolside (weather permitting) dancing and birthday cake.

Whaaaa? Birthday cake? Yes, birthday cake! Bihl Haus Arts will also be celebrating its 5th birthday! Proceeds from the silent auction will help ensure that Bihl Haus Arts continues to provide quality programs for years to come. So, please plan to join us for this dazzling celebration of text, art, music, food, dance, and 5 years of--ok, I'm going to say it just one last time--novel programming at Bihl Haus Arts on Friday, October 8th, from 6 to 9 pm.

Gasping for Air

Here's a short note I wanted to share with you regarding our SLHW Secretary's review of a short story written by Gaby Madrid:

Hi Vincent,
I just read the poem titled Gasping for Air by Maria Gabriela Madrid in Voices de La Luna. Wow! You can find it in short prose under Fiction. At first I thought, Oh, it's a nice family get together kind of short story. Then come the little tidbits... all is not as it seems. The shock is the last few paragraphs. I sat there stunned. Who would have thought it?
That was reminiscent of Poe or Patterson... Anyway, it was thoroughly enjoyable. I hope everyone gets a chance to read it... mlb.

New Event at Barnes and Noble, La Cantera

From Josie Mixon:

Dear Fellow Poets and Supporters,

I am not quite sure how I should promote this event without tooting my own horn so here goes:

As some of you may have heard we (Voices de La Luna Magazine) are starting a new venue at Barnes & Noble @ La Cantera beginning on Wednesday, September 22nd which will be the 4th Wednesday of the month.

I have the honor of being the first featured poet and will be presenting. It is perfect timing since October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and many of you recognize my passion for promoting awareness for all victims and survivors of abuse.

I will read from my latest book "Off the Beaten Path" and my previous books as well. I have other collections which most people are not familiar with one which has been accepted for publication by Pecan Grove Press (2012) called Vigorous Calm which is a collection of poetry of place. I have other collections as well as so many of us poets do but one that I intend to read from which is still unpublished and has never been submitted called "Between Borders" which is a collection of poetry about my hometown and its unique and sometimes special traditions, myths and stories. Some of which is unexpectedly funny due to how serious it is. ok, I know that doesn't make sense so I will explain it, briefly. I was born in Mission, Texas on June 8, 1963. Mission is 13 miles, mas o menos from the Mexican border. My mother was born in the house I grew up in and her mother (Comanche) was born in Mexico. Her dad (Apache) was also born in Mexico. On my dad's side we are decendents from the first settlers from the Canary Islands. So this should explain alot of things about me (hopefully). My passion begins with my children who are my life followed by my brothers and sisters (victims & survivors) of abuse. The rest you already know as I currently run open mic at Barnes & Noble at Ingram Festival. Just

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Photographer ERIC LANE Explores “ART DRIVEN LIVES”
at GALLISTA GALLERY, 1913 S. Flores
opens 2nd Saturday, Sept. 11th, 6-9 pm

Dear Friends of Bihl Haus Arts,

Have you ever felt that artwork on exhibit in a gallery or museum sometimes has an anonymous quality? As if it becomes disassociated--disembodied, if you will-- from the artist? Well, we have the cure! Please join the Bihl Haus gang at GALLISTA GALLERY on 2nd Saturday, September 11th, 6-9 pm, for the opening reception of “Art Driven Lives” by photographer ERIC LANE.

In his intentionally casual portraits that reunite artists with their work, Eric explores and celebrates the “Art Driven Lives” of some of San Antonio’s most interesting contemporary artists--many will be at the opening--, including Rolando Briseño, Franco Mondini-Ruiz, Jane Madrigal, Russell Stephenson, Vanessa Hill, Albert Alvarez, David Zamora Casas, and Raul Castellanos.

Never been to Gallista before? Now's the perfect time to visit! Gallista is located just south of Downtown, at 1913 S. Flores. You'll enjoy music by DJ Roach (Tony Rocha), who spins Smooth Jazz, Conjunto, Motown, and Soul music. The evening will feature hors d’oeuvres by Citlalli Cafe and libations, of course. Also that evening: an informal open mic poetry reading at 7 pm organized by Tom E. On exhibit, too, are new photographs by emerging artist Louis Sanchez, and Gallista artist studios will also be open.

We hope to see you there!
Kellen

P.S. As always, please feel free to forward this email and to print and post the attached invitation in conspicuous places!

This official Fotoseptiembre exhibit is co-sponsored by Gallista Gallery and Bihl Haus Arts. Joe Lopez’s Gallista Gallery, located just south of downtown San Antonio at 1913 S. Flores, showcases Chicano art. New exhibits open monthly, and the gallery features an open house every Second Saturday. In addition to Joe Lopez's studio, the gallery is also home to several other San Antonio artists. For more information, contact Joe Lopez at: 210-212-8606 or www.gallista.com

Bihl Haus Arts is a not-for-profit contemporary art gallery located at 2803 Fredericksburg Rd. on the premises of Primrose at Monticello Park Senior Apartments. September Meeting: Dr. Rafael Castillo

Fellow Writer,
Please save the date of Monday, Sept. 13, for the monthly meeting of the Society of Latino and Hispanic Writers of San Antonio at the Barnes and Noble, San Pedro Crossing, at 7:30 p.m. Our guest speaker with be Dr. Rafael Castillo, an English professor at Palo Alto College and author of the recently published, Aurora.

From a Floricanto news release: These eleven tightly-packed short stories, often allegorical yet visceral, range from the phantasmagorical "Aurora", whose misdeed has condemned her to a cyclical river of Eternal Return, to the agnostic Tomas and faithful Pedro in the theological "Penitent of Guadalupe Street", where truth is an enigma wrapped in a metaphor. In another story, a bellicose dwarf is murdered and the story is told from shifting points of view. In "Dwarfs and Penitents," an angry jilted husband searches the cobblestone streets of Prague in search of vengeance, while in "The Sands of Dhahran," a middle-age soldier battles his demons during Operation Desert Storm. In these luminous stories, Castillo give us penitents, dwarfs, lost youth, WWII vets, pachucos, doppelgangers, and memorable others populating the American literary landscape.
Dr. Castillo teaches writing and literature at Palo Alto College in San Antonio, Texas. He is the author of Distant Journeys, and his writing has appeared in The Arizona Quarterly, College English, Imagine, English Journal, Frank, New Mexico Humanities Review, Puentes, Southwestern American Literature, Saguaro, and ViAztlán. His fiction has also been widely syndicated and anthologized in Under the Pomegranate Tree (Washington Square Press), Lone Star Literature (W.W.Norton), Hispanic Link, (Washington, DC) and New Growth (Corona Press).
"Castillo has a poet's feel for language and a gritty sense of urban reality. Aurora and other stories is a welcome addition to the growing body of Mexican American literature," --Don Graham is the J. Frank Dobie Regents Professor of American Literature and English at UT-Austin, and a writer-at-large for Texas Monthly.

"Complicated, interesting, and enthralling, Castillo has one of the most authentic voices coming out of Aztlan. Our inheritance is in his words," --Sheila Sanchez-Hatch, author of Strong Box Heart
"A personal memory of profound intimacy and delicately layered...Castillo's book is enticing and energizing," --Carmen Tafolla, Sonnets To Human Beings.

Poetry and Art Show

From Ernest Hernandez:

My name is Ernest...Hernandez.

I am a poet here in San Antonio. I've been speaking with the guy who started the Art at the Jalapeno show and there will be on opportunity to have an art show where the art goes with a poem.

There will be probably 30 to 35 pieces and what would happen is once pictures are taken of what will be sumbitted, those would be shared with the poets who can then write a poem about the art, their interpretation of it. Or apply one that already exists. They would then be submitted and go from there to see which will be displayed.

Please let me know if you think any of your poets might be interested. Or maybe I could say a few sentences at your event.

Thank You
Ernest H.
