Trinidad Sanchez Jr Poetry Festival

April 28 at 11:45 am - The Trinidad Sanchez Jr. Poetry Festival will be at Northwest Vista College. Author Sandra Cisneros and the wife of Trinidad Sanchez - Regina Chavez y Sanchez - will be at the event and will particpate at 12:45 p.m. in a panel discussion titled "The Future of Chicanismo."

Call to Action for Literacy

On April 30th, San Antonio will celebrate El Dia de los niños, dia de los libros with other cities in the US and in Mexico. Mayor Castro will issue an urgent call to every person in San Antonio to take action to reverse San Antonio’s deplorable literacy rates.

SACOL, the San Antonio Commission on Literacy, invites you to attend the ceremony with the Mayor’s Call to Action and the following Community Roundtable on Literacy. The roundtable will be the first of a series of Call to Action Roundtables leading to a city-wide economic summit on literacy in September, National Literacy Month. The Roundtable is an opportunity for participants from each sector of our city – educational, non-profit, business, cultural, religious, athletic, etc. to define the challenge, identify the opportunities, and make specific policy recommendations for action by the City of San Antonio.

This is different work from the intense planning so capably led by Literacy SA the past year. The master plan for services created through the Literacy SA process will not come to fruition until a clear policy priority is set for the city. Please join us for this next important step.

A one-night-only celebration of text and image awaits you at Bihl Haus on Thursday, April 22, 7 pm, when John Phillip Santos reads from his new memoir "The Farthest Home Is in an Empire of Fire (A Tejano Elegy)." In his acclaimed 1999 Places Left Unfinished at the Time of Creation, John Phillip told the story of one Mexican family--his father's--set within the larger story of Mexico itself. In this elegantly written new book, he tells of how another family--this time, his mother's--erased and forgot over time their ancient origins in Spain.

John Phillip will read at Bihl Haus encircled by the work of many of his artist-friends who have inspired him during the years he spent writing The Farthest Home. He describes San Antonio’s artists as “being at the vanguard of transforming our city,” leading it to become “a cultural capital of the new República Cósmica of the United States.” This ephemeral exhibit, on view Thursday, April 2nd, only, will be extraordinary, reflecting the author’s own sophisticated aesthetic and underscoring his deeply personal relationship with this remarkable group of artist visionaries, including Ricky Armendáriz, Norman René Avila, Rolando Briseño, Joan Frederick, Raphael Guerra, Pedro Luján, Cesár Martínez, Franco Mondini-Ruiz, Angel Rodríguez-Díaz, Terry Ybañez, Davíd Zamora Casas, and more. Books will be available for signing.

P.S. A little bit about John Phillip Santos: A San Antonio native, he is the first Mexican American Rhodes Scholar to study at Oxford. His awards include the Academy of American Poets' Prize at Notre Dame and the Oxford Prize for fiction. His articles on Latino culture have appeared in the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, and the San Antonio Express-News, among numerous other publications. John Phillip served as writer and producer for more than forty television documentaries for CBS-TV and PBS-TV, two of which garnered Emmy nominations. His' 1999 family memoir, Places Left Unfinished at the Time of Creation (Viking / Penguin), was a finalist for the National Book Award. In 2006 it was selected for the "One Book, One City" reading program in San Antonio. After a 21-year stay in New York City, John Phillip moved back to his hometown several years ago, where he resides with his wife, poet Frances Santos, and their infant daughter.

Join SARA For Build-A-Book 2010!

BUILD-A-BOOK is San Antonio Romance Authors’ [SARA] 4-part series of hands-on workshops educating aspiring writers how to write, sell and promote fiction in the twenty-first century. This series of workshops, led by our award-winning published SARA authors, is open to the general public. We invite anyone who has ever thought of putting pen to paper for publication to attend. Join us for information, fun, and a novel way to learn about writing, and the business of books.

Alan Birkelbach

Alan Birkelbach is the 2005 Poet Laureate of Texas. His work has appeared in journals and anthologies such as San Pedro River Review, Oak Ben Review, the Langdon Review, and the Concho River Review. He was nominated for a Wrangler award for his contributions to Southwest Letters, and his is a member of the Poetry Society of Texas, The National Federation of State Poetry Societies, and the Academy of American Poets.

He has five collections of poetry: Bone Song, Weighed in the Balances, No Boundaries, New and Selected Works (the first in the Texas Poet Laureate Series from TCU Press) and Translating the Prairie: Plano, Texas in Words and Pictures.

Jo LeCoeur is a poet and fiction writer. She teaches English and creative writing at the University of the Incarnate Word. This is our quarterly "Cinco Minutos with You" event that always unveils interesting stories and gives writers the opportunity to receive feedback on the stories they have written.

Estimados compañeros, gracias por la oportunidad de dirigir nuestra junta el próximo 5 de abril a partir de las 7:30 de la noche y asignar el jercicio de escritura.

Desde que leí por primera vez a Horacio Quiroga, ha sido uno de mis escritores favoritos. El cuento La gallina degollada, en mi opinión, es uno de los mejores ejemplos de su obra. Para quienes no lo hayan leído y para quienes quieran recordarlo, incluí los siguientes enlaces con versiones en español e inglés.

Destaca de manera significativa en esta obra lo elocuente de las descripciones. El narrador omnisciente crea un ambiente tenso donde se enmarca la tragedia del matrimonio Mazzini-Ferraz. El lenguaje es directo, coloquial, crudo y desprovisto de adornos. El tema recibe un tratamiento naturalista donde se conjugan la vida, la muerte y el retraso mental en una descripción cronológica. Se hace uso mínimo de recursos literarios como símil, metáfora y otros.

Con todo respeto para ustedes y para el autor, la tarea consiste en desarrollar una de las siguientes opciones:

En un mínimo de 300 palabras, imitando en la medida de lo posible el estilo de Quiroga —

· Cambiar el final a partir del momento en que le matrimonio regresa de pasear por las quintas.

· Escribir la Parte 2 de esta historia. ¿Qué sucedió después con el matrimonio y sus hijos?

· Escoger cualquier sección del cuento donde se puedan agregar 300 palabras de texto que apoyen, expliquen, aclaren o justifiquen lo que ahí se dice.

El contenido de este cuento se presta mucho para que nuestros poetas también se inspiren en temas adversos, su desasosiego y posible redención.
Espero que disfruten escribiendo y puedan compartir con nosotros su talento.
