Dagoberto Gilb at Central Library

From San Antonio Public Library:

Texas author Dagoberto Gilb is known for his spare, crisp writing style and his topics, which focus on “working-class men who are slowly awakening to their ineptitude at relationships, who have a hard time shaking off old addictions, and who can’t quite move their careers out of neutral” (Kirkus Reviews), with a special focus on the experiences of Mexican-American men. Mr. Gilb’s newest book, Before the End, After the Beginning, is a collection of short stories that revisits his perennial themes.

Written during a period of recovery and rehabilitation after a stroke he suffered in 2009, it also explores themes of morality, physical frailty, prejudice and family. You’ll have a chance to hear Mr. Gilb speak at the Central Library at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 2. The same event will also feature some of San Antonio’s rising literary lights. Mark your calendar and plan to join us for a session with an author whose work has appeared in Harper’s and The New Yorker. It’s free and everyone is invited (and the first hour of parking in the Library parking garage is free with a validated ticket.)

Here's what the author says about the book: Strange things are happening in this collection that contains a novella and five stories: An English professor's near-death experience inexplicably changes the nature of the universe. A vision follows a troubled Vietnam veteran home from the war. A hitchhiker gets a ride from the wrong Jesus. A quiet insurance underwriter goes on a sudden and murderous rampage. A disembodied voice haunts its unfortunate victims. Mysterious creatures infest a man's home and his life. Catherine Bowman at UTSA

From Wendy Baker:

Hi Everyone,

I hope you can come hear Catherine Bowman read at UTSA on Friday, October 21 (7:30, Business Bldg, University Room -- BB 2.06.04). It should be a terrific evening.

She's a marvelous poet, with four collections-- most recently, The Plath Cabinet (Four Way Books, 2009), a fascinating book. But my favorite of her titles is 1-800-Hot-Ribs (Gibbs-Smith, 1993, reissued Carnegie-Mellon, 2010). She grew up in San Antonio (and El Paso) and has won more prizes than I'm going to name here. We're especially thrilled to welcome her because, before moving to NYC for grad work at Columbia, she received her BA from UTSA. She teaches at Indiana University.

Please help to spread the word and come hear Cathy!

Warmest wishes to you all,
Wendy

Chicana Power!

San Antonio Chapter of Mujeres Activas en Letras y Cambio
Social, Esperanza Peace and Justice Center and the Women’s
Studies Institute at UTSA

¡Chicana Power! Contested Histories of Feminism in the
Chicano Movement
Author Maylei Blackwell and Anna NietoGomez

The first book-length study of women's involvement in the
Chicano Movement of the late 1960s and 1970s, ¡Chicana
Power! tells the powerful story of the emergence of Chicana
feminism within student and community- based organizations
throughout southern California and the Southwest. As Chicanos
engaged in widespread protest in their struggle for social
justice, civil rights, and self-determination, women in el
movimiento became increasingly militant about the gap between
the rhetoric of equality and the organizational culture
that suppressed women's leadership and subjected women to
chauvinism, discrimination, and sexual harassment.
