Bill Santiago--Saturday

Bill Santiago has a book signing at Barnes & Noble San Pedro Crossing at 2 p.m., this Saturday. Santiago, a comedian, is the author of “Pardon My Spanglish ¡Porque Because! — One Man’s Guide to Speaking the Habla” (Quirk Books, $14.95).

I will be transporting Bill to the Barnes and Noble event and hope to see our Society members there!

FROM HIS BIO: Bill Santiago is the first born of at least four children, becoming a standup after narrowly escaping a career in journalism, facing the fact that as a comedian he was funny, but as a reporter he was a joke.

With the premiere of his first television special, “Comedy Central Presents: Bill Santiago,” he won over fans nationwide with his dead-on observations about Spanglish – “twice the vocabulary and half the grammar!” and his beloved catchphrase “¡Porque Because!”

He has also appeared on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” Comedy Central’s “Premium Blend,” “Que Locos,” “American Latino,” and is scheduled to appear on “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” this fall. Last year, he hosted the Latin Grammy Person of the Year Award ceremony, honoring Juan Luis Guerra (the tallest Dominican he’s ever met), at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas.

Anthology seeks published crime works

The following email is sent from Sarah Cortez, a Houston author who gave a presentation to the Society several months ago.

An anthology she edited, which includes a story by our own Berta Johnson, will be released in the next couple of weeks.

Here's her request:

I have received a request from another editor who is doing a volume of classic crime short stories set in Los Angeles for an excellent publisher. If you have such a story, OR know of another Hispanic/Latino author who has such a story, please let me know. The story might have been published years ago -- that's fine also. This anthology is featuring stories from the past.

Here are the constraints:
* story must be previously published
* story must involve a serious crime and have a noir feel
* story should be less than 7,000 words
* story should have a strong sense of place, i.e. Los Angeles

Storytelling for Nonfiction Writers
Why are stories so powerful? Whether it's personal essays, travel writing, or magazine pieces, the most compelling nonfiction writing tells a story. The same techniques that make fiction writing soar - strong characters, fresh dialogue, a gripping plot - can also make nonfiction writing transcendent. But how do you find meaning and craft narratives from the jumble of "real" life? Borrowing from her experiences with immersion journalism, writer Cecilia Ballí will review the basic elements of story and share ideas for gathering the stories around you. The class will include substantial reading assignments and an optional critique of manuscripts.

Juanita Ulloa: CD Release Concert

Join the nation's leading bilingual singer-songwriter, JUANITA ULLOA, appearing with Juan Ortiz, Director of the Texas top Mariachi Campanas de America, Palo Alto College mariachi instructor, and CD arranger in a CD release concert of CANTA MI SON! (Sing my song!) on Sunday, March 29 at 1:30 p.m. at Bethany Congregational Church, 500 Pilgrim Street in San Antonio. The children who recorded on the CD will perform as well.

Dear Friends of Bihl Haus Arts,

The women didn’t fight at the Alamo, but they are the true heroines of that battle. They had to survive without husbands, fathers, sons, brothers, and lovers. What happened to them? How do women survive war? What side were they on? Did the (white/brown/black) women enjoy the benefits of the “freedom” the men fought and died for? “I think it’s time for women to turn the Alamo into a monument to peace, a wailing wall, if we are serious about ending war,” says writer Barbara Renaud Gonzalez.

This program, the fourth in a series of annual reconsiderations of the Alamo by artists, authors, poets, performers, and scholars organized by Bihl Haus Arts, is an official Luminaria event.
In a related Poetry Month event, Austin poet and playwright Celeste Guzman Mendoza will read from her recent poetry about women, their lives, and their work, at Bihl Haus Arts on Saturday, April 4, 2-4 pm.

Monday's Meeting

Just a reminder that tonight's meeting of the Society of Latino and Hispanic Writers of San Antonio guest author will be retired Army Major General and current interim CEO of the San Antonio Housing Authority, "Freddie" Valenzuela.

The meeting is free and open to the public.

It will be held at the Barnes and Noble, San Pedro Crossing, tonight--Monday, March 9--at 7:30 p.m.

Major General Valenzuela is the author of "No Greater Love: The Lives and Times of Hispanic Soldiers." click on the book title for my review that appeared in September 2008.

Thank you to everyone who attended Thursday's special meeting of the Society of Latino and Hispanic Writers of San Antonio where Lupe Gonzalez (third from left) and I (R) welcomed Antonio Farias, Chief Diversity Officer at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (L) and Dr. Jose B. Gonzalez, a professor of English at the Academy who was in San Antonio to receive the 2009 American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education Outstanding Faculty of the Year Award.

A very big and special "THANK YOU" to our anonymous donor who funded Dr. Gonzalez's presentation, room rental at Gemini Ink and purchased delicious food and beverages.

From the Macondo Foundation website: Begun in 1998 by writer Sandra Cisneros and named after the town in Gabriel García Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude, the week-long workshop transforms San Antonio, Texas - and more broadly, La Frontera - into a space of intense artistic and cultural creativity. Every summer, the Macondo Workshop meets from the last week in July at the Our Lady of the Lake University campus in San Antonio, Texas.

SLHW Welcomes Dr. Gonzalez

The Society of Hispanic and Latino Writers is hosting a reception in honor of Dr. Jose B. Gonzalez, Professor of English at the United States Coast Guard Academy, New London, CT. Dr. Gonzalez will be in San Antonio to receive the Outstanding Faculty of the Year Award from the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education at its annual conference. We are fortunate to have Dr. Gonzalez here to read from his poetry collection.

Dr. Gonzalez was born in San Salvador, El Salvador, and immigrated to Connecticut at the age of eight. He has been the recipient of such honors as Connecticut's Higher Education Multicultural Faculty of the Year Award and New England Association Teachers of English Poet of the Year Award. He has published poetry in such journals as Callaloo, The Teacher’s Voice, Palabra, Acentos Review, Calabash and Colere, and anthologies including Coloring Book, Nantucket: A Collection, and Latino Boom: An Anthology of U.S. Latino Literature, which he also co-edited. His work was most recently included in a special edition of OCHO featuring Latino poets. He is the editor of LatinoStories.com, a popular resource for the study of Latino literature and Latino studies. In addition, he has contributed critical and nonfiction essays to such journals as New England Quarterly and to National Public Radio and has been a featured speaker at numerous colleges, universities and other organizations throughout the U.S.

Also reciting some of his own poetry will be Antonio Farias, Chief Diversity Officer at the Academy. Mr. Farias has published essays and short fiction in the following periodicals—Chicken Soup for the Latino Soul, Latino Boom, Urban Latino Magazine, and Bilingual Review. He has lectured widely on the history of collaboration among underrepresented populations in the United States, the unsteady rise of the Latino middle class, and the emergence of post-ethnic identities and coalitions.
