Awaken the Sleeping Poet

Awaken the Sleeping Poet, Barnes & Noble
Tomorrow night! Thursday, June 30, beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Featured Reader: Valerie Bailey

Valerie has just returned from the National Federation Of State Poetry Societies (NFSPS)
National Convention. She returned home with a First Place, a Second Place, and
Four Honorable Mentions. She will be reading her winning poems and explaining
some of how NFSPS works. When you take first place and there were over four
hundred submissions to that contest, taking first place is a huge deal. And, as
Valerie puts it, when there are those kinds of submissions, even an honorable
mention is a big deal at the national level. Come listen to her award winning poems and some of
her adventures at the NFSPS Convention.

Bereavement Notice

My fellow writers,

It is with a heavy heart that I must notify you that a good friend of the Society, Mr. P.C. McKinnon, has passed away.

Mr. McKinnon was a poet and frequently attended our meetings and even gave a presentation.

He was a staunch supporter of poetry in our community and worked tirelessly to promote poetry not only during National Poetry Month (April) but year 'round.

Here is his obituary, which is in today's San Antonio Express-News: McKinnon

Monday's Meeting

Monday's meeting featuring Editor Sarah Cortez (center in green top), editor of the recently released anthology "You Don't Have a Clue" had one of the largest turnout in recent memory! Sarsh had some of the anthology's contributors present at the meeting for a reading and a series of questions and answers.

A special thank you to Bertha Jacobson (second from left), an SLHW member and contributor to the anthology, so making arrangements for the evening's event.

A big "THANK YOU" to our host Debra at Barnes and Noble, San Pedro Crossing, for her generous support of our writer's group.

Poet Meeting Tonight

From Josie Mixon (sent last night):

Good Day My Fellow Poets and supporters of poetry!!!

It's hot......Do you think if we read poetry about rain it will rain? If so then somebody needs to stop reading poems about fire, heat and sun. Although since I have my writing lung back now it just might be me.

Tomorrow night (at Barnes and Noble Ingram Festival) we do not have a featured guest which is to the advantage of anyone who wants to sign up for five minutes. We will begin with our fabulous poetry workshop at 6:00pm with Jim Brandenburg followed by open mic at 7:00 with Josie Mixon (me). I will be there and I intend to keep open mic running until 8:30. You do not have to sign up for five minutes so come on over and share your beautiful voice with us. If our die hard poets want to continue until closing please feel free to do so just don't be surprised if our B&N Ingram hosts have you helping them to clean up.

For those of you who sometimes forget to bring your poetry to the poetry venue (huh ) don't forget!!!!

Please note that Voices De La Luna will soon be out with the next edition of our wonderful magazine. It would make a great Father's Day present for the poetry lover!!!

On a personal note I would like to add a special message to our friend Carolyn Sanchez who has been a bit on the downside lately due to health reasons. As many of you know and feel as I do we are a family who share an extraordinary talent which is the ability to communicate through poetry. We speak our minds and pour our hearts out and on this night I would like to dedicate open mic to Carolyn Sanchez. I have openly copied all of you so that Carolyn will have access to your email addresses and you to hers. Carolyn my dear friend, you have my heart. I love you and miss you very much. Kick that cancer in the ass asap and come on back to us! Keep on writing!

Comadre University Workshop Teleconference

From Marcela Landres:

WHAT: Comadre University Workshop Teleconference, sponsored by
Las Comadres, http://www.lascomadres.org/

How to Hire (or Fire) an Agent
Hiring the wrong agent can wreak havoc on your writing career for years to
come. Protect yourself by learning how to choose the right one. If you're
already chosen the wrong one, learn how to conduct a graceful "divorce."
Topics to be discussed include: when to hire an agent, where to find one,
identifying red flags, signs of a keeper, and how to tell when it's time to
let go.

WHEN: Tuesday, June 21, 8 p.m.- 9 p.m. EST

WHO: Marcela Landres is the author of the e-book How Editors Think: The
Real Reason They Rejected You, publishes the award-winning e-zine
Latinidad, and is an Editorial Consultant who helps writers get published by
editing their work and educating them on the business side of publishing.
A member of the Women's Media Group, she has acted as a judge for the
PEN/Beyond Margins Award, and was formerly an editor with Simon &
Schuster. For more information, visit http://www.marcelalandres.com/

TESTIMONIAL: "It was so nice to meet you at the Unicorn Writers' conference.
My best friend, Stephanie Robinson, and I are co-authoring a children's YA
novel. We both agreed that your workshop was very informative and really
made the event especially worthwhile. The raw, real information that you
shared with the group was so refreshing. It is so rare to listen to a
professional that clearly loves what they do and can offer valuable
information that is truly helpful."

June Meeting Announcement (Spanish)

From Bertha Jacobson:

Me daría mucho gusto verlos!

Bertha Jacobson

Poetry with Cyra Dumitru

From our friend, Josie Mixon:

Good Day My Fellow Poets,

Happy Summer! It feels like summer already. So sorry I missed the venue on the 18th but I was at a writing workshop in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I wasn't sure I was going to go until the last minute because of $ but determination and ambition helped tremendously (my jewelry sales for gas money etc...). Please join us on June 1st at Barnes and Noble, Ingram Festival, for a fabulous evening of poetry. We will begin at 6:00pm with a poetry workshop at 6:00pm with Jim Brandenburg and at 7:00pm our guest speaker, Cyra Dumitru will present. We will end the evening with open mic from 7:30ish until we read to our hearts content. Please read Cyra's bio below.

Cyra S. Dumitru has been writing poetry all her life. Her poems have appeared in national and regional publications such as War, Literature and the Arts, Nimrod, Southern Poetry Review, Windhover, The Texas Observer, the Texas Poetry Calendar, and the San Antonio Express-News. For the past two years, her poems have been selected to travel around on the VIA Metropolitan buses during the month of April as part of the Poetry on the Move project.
She has three collections of poems, two of which are published by Pecan Grove Press. She teaches writing at St. Mary's University, and has served as a poetry writing consultant for the Children's Bereavement Center of South Texas, various local school districts and the San Antonio Museum of Art.

Poet Hayan Charara says of the poems in her third collection called Remains that, "What's striking about this book is its quiet wisdom; what's remarkable about it is that even when it looks at the horrors and losses of the world, it finds beauty. There are poems of redemption, of compassion, of a poet with a great and necessary understanding of what it means to be human."

I look forward to seeing everyone there. See you Wednesday!!!!
