Publisher's Description:

When Sandy Saavedra lands her dream job with the popular website ¡Latino Now!, she can't wait to write hard-hitting pieces to combat all those stupid Latino stereotypes. While visions of Pulitzers dance in her head, her editor in chief is suddenly laid off, replaced by the infamous Dolores Villanueva O'Sullivan. Dolores has one mission: make ¡Latino Now! an internet phenomenon, no matter how many pandering puff pieces she has to pack onto its pages. Sandy doesn't see how she can keep this job without losing her soul, especially when she's sent to Middle-of-Nowhere Texas to investigate the dumbest legend her people ever created, the Chupacabra. She fears she's about to fail an assignment-and lose her job-until she meets Tío Jaime, a grandfatherly hermit who might be crazy, or might be the best thing that ever happened to Sandy's career.

Call for Literature on Conjunto Music

The Guadalupe Announces Call for Literature on Conjunto Music

(San Antonio, Texas) – The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center is seeking literature on Conjunto music for possible publication in a special edition of the 29th Annual Tejano Conjunto Festival en San Antonio program magazine. Literature can include scholarly articles, short stories, poetry, essays, interviews with Conjunto artists, or any other written work that incorporates some aspect of Conjunto music. Conjunto is an original American musical ensemble and style of music that was created by the Texas-Mexicans and uses the button accordion and bajo sexto as its principal instruments.

Articles, poems, and short stories of any length will be accepted for review and possible publication. Submissions are being accepted through March 1, 2010. Literature should be e-mailed as an attachment to Juan Tejeda, director of the 29th Annual Tejano Conjunto Festival and editor of this special edition of the program magazine for the Festival at juantejeda@sbcglobal.net. Literature submissions will be reviewed and entrants will be notified if their entries were selected for publication.

“The program magazine for the Tejano Conjunto Festival has always been a very important educational source on Conjunto music, and an economic generator and promotional tool for the Festival and the musicians performing at the Festival,” said Tejeda, who created the Tejano Conjunto Festival and directed it for the first 17 years while serving as the Xicano Music Program Director for the Guadalupe.

The 29th Annual Tejano Conjunto Festival will take place from May 11-15, 2010, at the Guadalupe Theater and Rosedale Park and will feature the Tejano Conjunto Festival Poster Contest; a Seniors Conjunto Dance; inductions into the Conjunto Music Hall of Fame; workshops for the button accordion and bajo sexto; a CD Release Party for the “Best of the 28th Annual Tejano Conjunto Festival” (recorded live at the 2009 Festival) at the Guadalupe Theater; and three days of over 20 of the very best bands in Conjunto music at Rosedale Park, plus, food and beverage booths, accordion raffle, student recital and more. The Tejano Conjunto Festival en San Antonio is produced by the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center.

The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1980 to preserve, promote and develop the arts and culture of the Chicano/Latino/Native American peoples for all ages and backgrounds through public and educational programming in six disciplines: dance, literature, media arts, theater arts, visual arts and music. Monday's Meeting

Fellow Writer,

Just a reminder that the next meeting of the Society of Latino and Hispanic Writers of San Antonio will be on Monday, January 11 at the Barnes and Noble, San Pedro Crossing, beginning at 7:30 p.m. This month's featured artist is Ana Maria Quevedo, who recently published a Spanish book entitled, Nos Vemos en Purgatorio. While Ana is a Spanish writer, her presentation will be in English (at least most of it!).

As an added bonus, our President Emeritus, Ruben Soto, will be at the meeting! Ruben has moved back to San Antonio after being away 4 years and I ask everyone to please join me Monday night and welcome him back home--to San Antonio and the Society. Ruben, some of you know, founded the Society in July 2004 in order to help Latinos and Hispanics accomplish their dreams of getting published, and I'm proud to say his dream and Society, is still going strong today!

See you Monday night!
Keep Writing,
Vince

Big Red needs a home

The following email is from Barbara Renaud Gonzalez, author of Golondrina, why did you leave me?:

Big Red ran away dragging this tire behind him on Christmas Day. He's at a shelter in Austin, on death row (he's been there waiting for a home, no luck yet) and deserves a good home with a yard. He LOVES cats and puppies and dogs. Hesitant around men and children, likes gentle people. Great guard dog, will bark but not bite. He's already lost an eye and had a leg broken as a result of abuse. I want to keep him but don't have a yard. Please let me know if you want him. He's less than 2 years old, and weighs about 50 lbs. Maybe you can foster him, and when I move into a house in a few months, I'll take him back?

Contact me or especially Ginger at ginger.cherny@gmail.com Maybe you know someone? He's had a hard life and deserves better than this.
